I will have to check that place out some time.  I do get up to upstate every now & again.  Although Auburn is out of the way for me, with such a recommendation I will make it a point to go.

It has been a long time since I visited the bakery. One of my strong memories of Cameron's Bakery was an older lady carrying donuts out to the display cases from what I guess was the  where it all happens. She always looked tired a bit bent over as she carried the tray of one kind of donuts . Purely a hard working lady her apron and parts of her clothing heavily dusted with flower. Ironically it always was a bitter sweet experience, pun intended, as it was clear she worked very hard and very long to make those bites of heaven. I often wondered if she ever knew how many smiles and the excitement her labors brought the folks who enjoyed her products..............I never saw her with a smile on her face.

Hi Mike, I left this on another thread of yours I read first. Welcome to the Forum, great people here, and lots of knowledge, I have learned a lot. We vacationed up in the Finger Lakes around 2008, we stayed on Lake Owasco, I believe. We had a GREAT time! Dunno if that’s near-a-bouts you? Welcome.

Lake Owasco where you visited is about 40 miles from the town I live in , Seneca Falls 13148.  SF sits at the north end of Cayuga Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes.

The town of SF is quite small about 10,000 population but SF is famous I guess for a couple of things....

First SF is the birthplace of Women's Sufferage movement and the 14th Amendment  Elizabeth Cady Stanton lived here .  https://nyassembly.gov/member_files/058/20090226/

Secondly it is widely accepted that SF is the basis for Bedford Falls the town in the Frank Capra movie It's A Wonderful Life. While there is no solid proof Capra ever visited here is known to have visited family in Auburn NY which sits on Owasko Lake where you stayed , Names given to characters in the movie, specific houses of the time, mentions of  towns surrounding Seneca Falls / Bedford Falls are mentioned in the movie. There are other connections but the most famous of all "the bridge" featured in the movie is here with a story about a man named

Antoino Varacalli who jumped off the bridge to save a drowning lady losing his life in the process.

I remember we went to/through Seneca Falls at one point in our week there. Spent a day in Ithaca, I remember a good farmers market, and a bunch of waterfalls. Went to a Doubledays baseball game (love minor league baseball!), went to the zoo in Syracuse, made a trip up to Niagara. We had a blast! If there is any region that might have what it takes to get me to live far away from the ocean, this was the only one that made me think about it. Glad you found us.

Mike, it has been several years since I watched "It's a Wonderful Life".  That said, I was with my brother last year and went to do some insurance work with him in Cortland, at Bailey Place Insurance.  They told me that their business (and maybe signage) also provided some inspiration for the movie?  Details are kinda vague right now.

 

But speaking of that area, I want to see if I can bring @John Morris in here.  Just read this article a few days ago, and was floored by it really...

Basically that is very true. Since the discovery of the Wonderful Life fame everyone has staked a claim. Absolutely Seneca Falls has NO HARD EVIDENCE the town is the inspiration for the movie. Without doubt the movie mentions Elmira NY, Buffalo NY and certain other locality mentions so there is no doubt that Capra had knowledge of the region. It is a known fact that he had family in Auburn NY. about 15 miles from SF but it is all braggin' rights with no chronology of ownership to the claim.

Capra in several interviews never as far as anyone knows made a connective  comment to the area. Unlike Watkins Glenn NY which is the home of the Chevrolet Corvette the evidence is undisputed. Harley Earl in at least one situation directly stated the 53 Corvette was spawned in Watkins Glenn NY.  https://www.corvettemuseum.org/harley-earl/

So the chest thumping and the history boasting will continue with many claiming to have captured the brass ring on a merry-go-round that may have never even played a tune in their town.
