Old guy with old tools mostly turn trees into piles of sawdust but occasionally I get something right.

discovered segmented bowl turning about a year ago, Custom pens about 3 months ago. Working on Lichtenberg figure burning, epoxy resin casting  and just about anything else made from a tree. My oldest tool is a 1972 Sears table saw currently on it's 3rd motor.

Hope I can contribute some , I know I can learn a bunch.

Please ask any questions.

Welcome aboard . Great looking stuff and that shop pal is something to stay still that long. By the way Lichtenberg is very very risky. No one in our club does it any longer and the Fire Chief who demoed it over 10 years ago is on record to not do it . Been several deaths. OK sorry off my soap box and we welcome you wither you do it or not.

Welcome @calabrese55 to The Patriot Woodworker. Great to have you join up with us. Some awesome work you've displayed. Ya' got me on the table saw...mine's a 1977 Craftsman, but I have a couple Craftsman mid 60's RAS, a Craftsman floor standing drill press ~1969/1970...oh and an old Atlas Floor model drill press from the late 40's or early 50's (it belonged to my grandfather). Also an old Disston handsaw that belonged to my other grandfather circa ~1896.; but whose counting right?:P

Anyways, glad to have you here. Looking forward to seeing more of your work and sharing with us here. Great group of talented folks here. They just let me hang around to manage the donut shop. Speaking of donuts, new guy always brings donuts for the gang. I like chocolate iced, chocolate ones.

BTW, that dog on the table is amazing...looks so real and life like;)

Welcome aboard, glad to have you here.  We sure do like pics, thanks for posting some up:) Great work, and it looks like great shop space too

Hi Gerald,

No problem with the soap box I have many of them most of which I made myself. The Lichtenberg thing is not risky it is DANGEROUS. I have taken reasonable precautions in the design of the machine. I use a AC variable transformer to feed the microwave transformer, dual indicator lights to show me when the transformers are energized and a dead man foot switch with a 10 foot cord. I don't do the rubber glove, rubber floor matt thing.

My shop is a mile from my home and just about all the time I am alone for many hours there. I am painfully aware of how all  woodworking processes can bring serious harm or more . I do sincerely thank you for your kind warning on the process. I left a pay dues woodworking forum recently because I was berated heavily and told the forum forbid all talk and reference to that process .  I had no issue with the warning but the public flogging was a little too much.

Sincerely grateful for your style.

Hi GrandpaDave52

Thanks for looking in . Old tools are an excuse to buy new tools . I really want a real table saw but just can't bring myself to give up on the first real woodworking tool I bought.

I did have an old Sears lathe but I had to let that go when I got hooked on segmented bowls. As for the dog, his name is Buddy he actually works with me. He is in charge of guest greetings and quality control. In the quality function if Buddy gives me that on the table stare it means you are OK so far but don't screw it up. If he lifts his leg  it pretty much means it is over due for the scrap bin.

Hi HandyDan

I thought I added some text to this picture ????? no idea where it went so will retry here......

Pretty much everything about me is constructed from stuff I begged, borrowed or stole over the years. There are very few new ideas just some that are poorly circulated or slightly modified from existing stuff.

The picture below is something I have used for years for clamping anything I could adapt to the method. The image below is how I use it mostly now to construct segmented bowl rings in this case adding the feature ring to the semi finished bowl.

I was surprised to find it was a new method to a bunch of folks at another forum. The comments there were to typically use a heavy screw from above in a sturdy frame structure kind of like a hydraulic press arrangement.

The clamps here are just everyday pipe clamps fed through the holes in the bench top and the cross bar is just a hunk of wood. Not a new idea just kind of an adaptation of how a bench dog works I guess.

Thanks again for looking in BTW I do have my act together but unfortunately is is a well polished comedy

Hello Gene,

I get those looks from Buddy all the time. In this case because the table is for my wife and Buddy is very attached to her  it is just his warning to make sure I actually finish it someday.

I did actually my wife is  happy and Buddy didn't get a bunk mate.

Thanks for looking in.

John, I wish I could get you a dozen donuts from this place https://www.cameronsbakery.com/donuts-pastries.

I discovered this bakery when I was on the road sellin' stuff. They make the HEAVIEST / SOFTIEST donuts I have ever had. I would bring them by the dozens to my customers in power plants , paper mills, steel plants . I would leave a dozen or two in the maintenance shop and they would vaporize. The pipe fitters in some paper mills were in different areas and I caught heck because they could not get to the maintenance office fast enough before the donuts  were all gone. Even some of the managers and supervisors would fine a reason to be in the maintenance area when they knew I was coming in. Not because they cared about me but they became Pavlov's dogs over those donuts. :throbbinghead:
