March 14, 20233 yr Popular Post comment_310576 When last seen, these were what was left of the stash of Ash.. Not enough wide stuff, too many narrow things...sort through this and see what I can make.. Trim these, and maybe build a pair of doors? Try and have these 2 as the ends? Thin panel is too thin...the other? maybe rip down the center line, and make the 2 sides from them? Hmmmm...ok...Had Laundry Detail, today.... So...while I was down there....work on a few items...like the rough edges of the door parts.. Millers Falls No. 11, Type 2...works nicely as a jointer on small stuff...THEN trim for length, with the jointed edges against the mitre gauge.. Spread some glue along the mated edges, add some clamps and cauls... Door #1 is glued up...repeat for door #2. Then set both aside, for a day... While I work on a few other items ( waiting on the rinse cycle?) Saw was busy, today.... Wide panel has been ripped, the 2 end pieces were then ripped to match....was having trouble with one end piece...could not get it flat....and was getting too thin to work out..scrapped that one...need to resaw a new one......set up the tablesaw to cut a kerf...so that one side would match the existing sides/end Something like this..only, the saw blade can't reach all the way to the middle...we have ways... Saw about 1/2 way down, turn over, and saw from the other end.. Hardest part was keeping the saw from hitting the top of the vise... Needed to match this for thickness..came close...then cut away the worst parts, and match up to that other end piece... Wasn't quite flat,, We have ways.. Edges were a tad rough, too...saw marks.. Not a problem..planes were busy, today.. Ya think? Until the doors or done, this is about as far as I can go...need to size the box to the doors...first. then decide and a choice of corner joints...and whether to add a bread board edge to the doors. 90 minute in the shop, today...still have to bring the clothes upstairs from the dryer.. March 16, 20233 yr Author Popular Post comment_310790 4 squared. . Then line up the grain match.. And get the stock for the bread board ends ready.. The long one was cut done into 3 pieces..shorter one had a knot to get rid of... Milled tongues on the ends of both door panels...then reset the saw to mill the grooves.. Door #1 is already glued up...#2? Is still sitting over on the bench, for now...joint details? Will trim for length this evening...might even mill the lap joint between the 2 doors... Stay tuned... March 17, 20233 yr Author Popular Post comment_310796 Let it sit in the clamps for about 6 hours, or so....then cleaned them up, still trying to keep track of the grain match up...while trimming and squaring up...and, making them flat, again.. Circle is about where the swing arm latch will be going..keep wanting to call this... A Half-lap Joint...Will take the Stanley #71-1/2 to this, later, to clean it up a bit... Now that I know the size of the doors... These 4 could be cut to length... Maybe tomorrow, I can start on the 1/4" finger joints for the corners...and see about a few dados for 2 shelves? Warning: Don't stare at this too long, you might see something that ain't there... Stay tuned.. Report
March 18, 20233 yr Author comment_310905 4 corners, in 2 days? getting slow in me dotage? Hmm. first 2,,, used this saw...works, but binds up in the cut,,a bit of candle wax right above the teeth did help.. lay out tools used..chisel to set the spaces between fingers... then saw a bit..then chop a bit. . Use these to lay out the matching fingers.. Saw on the waste side of these lines...chop out the waste... Try a dry fit...then repeat the above for corner #2.. This was yesterdays shoptime... This morning, tried out two other saws... (still fighting this camera, getting it to load in the correct file) gave the top saw a brief tryout...too wavy in the cuts..went with the bottom one.. At least the cuts are straighter..even on the ends.. Dry fit #3 was a bit better... Figures, almost done before I get the hang of doing these, again... All 4 corners are now done..dry fitted, testing out the clamps....will need a few more? Well, after these get fitted into stopped dados... Which is the next task..maybe later, today? Depends on how bored I get.. 24 cloudy, windy degrees outside, with a dusting of that white crap, again..yuck... Stay tuned... Report
March 19, 20233 yr Author comment_310932 How to install 2 shelves in a box? And have them evenly spaced? We do a bit of math...11-1/4" divide by 3 =.....3-3/4" or there abouts...dividers to "step it off"...and set the shelves in place.. Center them on the marks..square a few lines across.. Right when I snapped the photo, the back one had slid to the left a hair Rig up a jig to hold one of the boards in place.. And knife a few lines..next up? were 2 chisels..a 1/4" wide one to dig out the waste...and a 1" wide one to chop the walls deeper than the knife could go... The wide chisel in the background ? it took a beating.Router plane to level the floor of the dado.. Dry fit to see how well we did...one done, 3 to go.. Tried a dry fit with all the parts..tried..it showed that either the dados weren't deep enough, or the shelves were 1/16" too long....hmm, easier to just buzz the extra off the end of both shelves..rather mess with the dados any more..Then another dry fit.. with about half the clamps, and no glue involved...for now...square showed this was out of square a hair,,, we have ways.. Diagonal clamp to pull things into square...I think that will do for one day.. Stay tuned...( anyone want to stop by and help glue this thing together?) Report

I take the open height, subtract the thickness of the two shelves, then divide the remainder by three for the space between each shelf and the box. Always helps if the dimensions are all whole numbers or at least easy fractions when divided by three. Hate it when the result is something like 3 and a half and a sixteenth and a little bit. Report
March 19, 20233 yr Author Popular Post comment_310965 Glue-up Sunday...need to get this ... Over to the assembly table... Knocked apart, and then glued up square...clamps? All 4 of my 18" clamps at the ready...others were on "Standby" Just the 12"s...used a bunch of these... Mallet and a brush for the glue were also needed.. Just one will do, thank you.. Just enough clamps...I think..check for square.. And, pull until it is.. Over on the bench.. Needs trimmed down to fit..this will be the back of the "Box"...about the only thing left to do, today? Is clean up this mess, and put the toys away.... Stay tuned... Report
March 21, 20233 yr Author comment_311082 Work on a Monday..removed all those clamps, set the box on top of the plywood panel..and then set the doors.. Then closed the doors... That new cutting gauge is about to get used/abused...traced around the box...lines to be cut.. About 10 passes...should be deep enough for the saw to follow...(and NOT hit the metal part of the vise underneath) Repeat for the other cut... Note to self: make this cut marking on BOTH faces, next time.... Spread some glue around with a brush..and let the Flash Mob clamps do their thing.. "Let no gap go un-clamped" Will try to clean this mess up, later today... Stay tuned.. Report
March 22, 20233 yr Author comment_311111 out of the clamps, cleaned up Couple corners needed work.. Planed things a bit smoother...I had thought about adding the doors..even set out the hinges.. Then, set out the parts for a stand.. Cut this in half...do a few fancy cuts on the bandsaw.. Fun part was getting them to match each other...had a piece of Pine to use as a base.. Had to bevel the ends a bit.. So it will hide. Plan is to glue the 3 pieces up.. Tomorrow clean it up..level things up..then glue and screw it to the bottom of the box.. Then add a piece of Ash in to re-enforce the feet......might do that, after the doors are on? Stay tuned.. Report
March 22, 20233 yr Author comment_311155 Base has been cleaned up, test fitted... At least it stands up, without promptly falling over...End detail.. Hard to see the Pine base, ain't it? Attachment points (besides the glue) That should do the trick...there is an "offset", though.. Where the doors will rest...speaking of which..cleaned up the rebate between the doors.. Needed leveled out near the other end..reset the router, it will have other tasks, today.. Clamped to the chopping block...lay out for the hinge..and then a few tools.. Knife the lines, with the square..3 whacks per on the chisels...cleaned out with the router..plane.. Pilot holes for the screw..wax on the threads...then close this one up.. I also worked on the second hinge for this door..then my get up and go..got up and went... Part of fitting the two door, was to plane an edge (top or bottom) so the door is flush with the top of the case. Plane a bit, test, plane a tad more, test fit.. Since both doors have a wider bread board end than the other...I worked down the wider of the two..Laid the first door on the case.. This is without any work being done where the hinges meet the case Stay tuned... Report
March 23, 20233 yr Author comment_311206 Went back to the shop last night...to check on a couple things...decided to just drill 6 pilot holes... Top and bottom most screws first, then the rest..stand this up, to see how it would look.. Opened, and...closed.. Apparently, I was in a rush to lay out the second door's hinges.. As something didn't quite look right...set the door over with the case... yep, wrong face..good thing those are only pencil marks...easy fix, close call... Hardware? Beside those hinges... "Two bags full" Need to make dowel tenons for the knobs... As for the latch.. Will have to be careful with this, as it is right over the lap joint between the doors Yep, it does pay to double check, now and then... Stay tuned.. Edited March 23, 20233 yr by steven newman Report

March 24, 20233 yr Author comment_311250 Something like this.. Maybe to hold the boxes all these bags of Tea (Black, Irish,)... Had to make the tenons for the knobs... Doors now have a bevel around the outside edges.. Done with a small block plane... Stanley No. 118 ( The "Boy-Proof" model) Added one more tool to the hinge set.. "Automatic" center punch...hold it place, press done until it triggers a spring inside....makes a nice dimple for the pilot drill bit Will see about a finish of some sort, later today...
