February 26, 20233 yr Popular Post That time again...time to clean the place up.. Sort through a few stacks..found some decent ones? Might come in handy...others? By the time all the bad stuff the cut away...this is what is left from one plank from upstairs...way too much bark and knots,,and holes.. There is a 1 x 6 x 2' that is just one big knot....other items.. Will meet up with the one on the right... All the further the tablesaw blade could reach...run the rip saw down the kerf to get some use out of these...throw the worst scraps out.. Then it become a puzzle as to how to put these all together into a project...might need some of these? We'll see... Stay tuned...
February 26, 20233 yr Author Popular Post There is still one plank upstairs...that I am trying to figure out WHAT it is good for... The "Good" end.. 3/4 x 6 x 6' plank...this is the good part..watch as I travel along the length... then a 3rd section... And finally the other end of this...thing.. A glance at the other face? Hmmm....maybe get some 1 x 3s out of this? $0.80 a Bft...Ash.... Not really a "keeper"?
February 26, 20233 yr Popular Post I've been on a leftover or re-use kick lately. Lots of small boards. Only a few large boards. Best source of wood right now is a huge coffee table I built in college. 3" diameter cylinder dark walnut legs, good BB plywood bottom. A good piece of BB plywood with walnut veneer on the top and some 3" wide walnut sides and back.
February 26, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Resaws have begun..cleared off the bench, got the thumbhole rip saw down... Hmmm...board is a bit too high..the saw? 28" long..5-1/2ppi... That's better...saw about halfway down, rotate, and come from the other end.. Until it pops apart...hard to tell when that will happen, can't see inside the kerf.. Bad show, when you bounce the saw against the bench.. Got 3 out of 5 boards done..before the "Get up & Go" ran out of gas... Decided to at least clean the first one up.. Van Camp No. 4......there WAS a strip right down the center...was.. Made a bit of sawdust, today.. Just a wee bit..... was trying to get a decent shot..there IS an 8 inside that "D"... I'm worn out..taking a LONG break.. Stay tuned..
February 28, 20233 yr Author Popular Post That last plank? Took some cutting and sorting, resawing, ripping, beltsanding, until finally.. This is all the good stuff from that plank of Ash....the rest? Will be in the fire pit..soon.. Average thickness is 1/2" Might find some use for these...maybe...there was one other board about ready for use... This is the first of the resaws....might try to get the rest done...we'll see...
February 28, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Decided to get in a bit of Cardio, this morning... There is a difference between the tablesaw kerfs and the D8's kerf... Circled area is where the 2 cuts by the D8 met up This usually happens...saw bounces off the top of the bench... Screw head is called a Plane Stop... As the Blue Dogs are a bit too tall...trying to level things out.. This is going to be..interesting...Knot! Sometimes, I need the big guy to stop by.. Old Heft & Hubris himself...not much will argue with him.. Spent a bit of time, making shavings... And..these guys were a bit busy, too.. Got these 2.. Flattened down to a smooth 3/4" thickness...the rest of this morning "output"? Yep...a very Busy morning... Have to stop and clean things out, now and then... Stay tuned...

March 1, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Hmmm..results so far, besides a messy floor? Have enough for 3 lids.. A stack of ends & sides... with enough left over to build 2 more boxes... Those 2 chisels? Are the ones I bought yesterday, for $5 a piece... 1' and 1/2" HSB & Co. all cleaned up and sharpened.. So..Box making parts? 6 parts to make a box...I can stash the rest out of my area... Until needed...one box at a time... needed to clear the work area, too... About all the room I'll need...waiting on this, right now.. And the shop to cool down a bit... Through dovetails? Or, finger joints by hand? Stay tuned..
March 2, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Dovetails, Day 1....Through Dovetails. Laid out Wasn't really happy with this lay out...corrected with the saw...so, drop this down... Got out a better saw.. Then chop the waste, starting with the outside "show" face.. Chopped about halfway down..leave a tab out on the edge...flip over.. Complete the chops..wide chisel to "dress" the side a bit...Use these pins to lay out the tails...saw on the waste side of the lines..the more line you leave, the tighter the joint.. Dry fitted...3 tries...was a hair too tight.... Then, just to say I can...but would rather not....I tried tails first...didn't go very well... After about 5 tries...compare to the pins first corner.. I think the next 2 will be Pins first, again... Stay tuned..
March 3, 20233 yr I think Steven is younger than he says. I couldn't do all that in three days much less ONE.

March 3, 20233 yr Author Harder to mark the pins...trying to trace around the tails....like with these narrow openings for the pins.
March 4, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Yesterday's results, before The Dungeon Creek decided to rise up Got corners #3 and #4 done in about 90 minutes.. Corner #3.. Once Corner #4 was done...tried a dry fit. . With all the parts...and tried out a few clamps...18" clamps were deemed to big...Settled for a few 6" and a few 12" clamps... This morning...grabbed a brush.. Bottle of glue, made a few cauls, and a spacer block... The calm before the storm? laid these out in order...then the fun can begin..and not much time to use a camera in, either...so.. Spacer block to prevent the sides from bowing in...Combo square to make sure things are square.. Looks good, so far.. One more 12" clamp to install, right after this photo...Glue brush to clear away any wayward glue... Let this sit a spell, Stay tuned...
March 4, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Figured 8 hours was time enough in the clamps, so...time to clean things up... Side #1...side #2 looks almost the same... Then began the task of squaring the ends to the sides... A case of sand, check with square, cuss, sand, check, cuss, sand..final check..then do the other end the same way... have one spot to fix..but we now are squared up...second glue up, coming up.. Trimmed down to match the box..roughly...will fine tune once the glue has dried overnight... BTW, Did you know there is a thing about clamps....they tend to Flash Mob.... Hmm..where'd the bottom panel go? Ah, there it is...check on the inside of the box? No runs, no drips, no errors? let this sit overnight....then clean things up, and see about a lid, of some sort... Stay tuned..
March 5, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Out of the clamps, this morning.. Needs a bit of cleaning up.. Ends needed trimmed a bit.. We have work to do...need to size the plane to the task.... I think this will do... End grain? Seems to work...edge grain? However, for the nasty looking bottom of this box..had to call in "Back-up"... There is a line from the movie Zulu..from Lt, Bromhead: "We can...cooperate, I say,I say" Sandpaper to remove any "fuzzy" stuff... Lid work...have the parts.. Lid is laying flat, needs trimmed to match the box...board on edge? needs ripped into strips on the Tablesaw.. Had to move a light, first.. To better see what I am cutting... That's better.... Making a series of strips...mitered at the ends...did a few dry fits, sand to better fit... Getting there...until the glue and clamps took over... Can always plane to fine tune.. Will need to clean out the squeeze outs, later.. Stay tuned..
March 6, 20233 yr Author Lid is out of the clamps, cleaned up, and is being fitted to the box...Monday Photo Shoot... Getting there...and..before the hardware can go on... Everything will get this round around...That box is the Hardware Supply Store.. Tiny screws and hinges... Too small for the pilot hole drill bit in the Goodell Pratt drill..so I bought some smaller, 1/16" bits... Plan being to use these in another drill...and keep 2 set up... Drill on the left is a Stanley Defiance (a knock off of a Millers Falls No. 5) Gave that drill a through clean and lube...doen't make a sound when you use it.. Looks like this should work... yep, Defiance Made in USA Not sure IF I should sand that handle smooth..or, use the grippy surface.. Stay Tuned..
