February 20, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Also done today... took this batch of pins... And set them where they need to go...and traced around each and every one of them... So that the next time I am in the shop...I can start to saw these tails... I also did a wee bit of metal working, today... Hole on the right was so wallowed out,,a 1/4" bolt would just slip right through...IF'n I going to re-do one...I might as well do all three..so.. 5/16" -18 tap...drill bit to chase out the old, wornout threads...results? I also cleaned up the clearcoated plate...thumbscrews also have a washer added... Center bolt was actually the shortest of the 3...I may go back and paint the bolts black, and any other missing spots...To shorten those bolts, I first ran a nut all the way on, stopping just below the point I need to cut...then the hacksaw to cut off the rest...grinder to clean up the cut end (hacksaw makes a mess of things) and then wire wheel things clean...THEN the nut can come off..preserving the threads...nut is still in the visegrips, BTW... Short Rust Hunt "trophy" No-name Scraper Plane...and a Mastercraft 1" chisel...$19 and change..
February 20, 20233 yr Popular Post Yep, putting a nut on any bolt that will be cut shorter is a trick I think I may have learned from my dad when I was 8 or 9. Lost track of how many students I had that had to learn that lesson the hard way. "I can't get this nut to thread on! What do I do!?" I've also painted bolt heads black so many time I may have finally run out of black spray paint, I have to admit I'm delighted at now being able to find bolts of many types with black oxide finishes or nickle/chrome plating or a bronze finish. BTW I'm very much enjoying your progress documentation. 4D
February 21, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Update..yes, I worked in the shop on a Monday.... Leg #2 is glued up to the top.... Not without putting up a royal Fight....leg panel tried to do the splits..TWICE ! We have ways... And tools to crank the clamps with...Mallet didn't work? Try that 32oz beater....and a block of Ash... To saw the tails...had to use a special saw.. Clamped the panel to the top of the bench TIGHT, with enough room under it to clear the bench vise...Then put the saw away...move the panel back onto the bench...and chop out the waste...being a Monday..more issues... 1/2" wide chisel....lost a chunk..on the next to last chop....we have more... I used both chisels...one to clean out the last chop..and the wider one to pare as needed...to get the pins to just slide into place...that is when the fight started Had to add a caul... One of the Harbor Freight 18" clamps, had an issue with it's handle....so, vise grips to finish turning the handle...when it comes back off, it is headed for Harbor Freight...exchange for a new one. As for that diagonal board(s)? they will be the stretchers....that I need to install next... Stay tuned...Never work on Mondays....unless the Boss says to...

Yep. Lifetime Warranty on their clamps. Few others do that or make it easy peasy to exchange. In spite of Monday woes, good progress.
February 21, 20233 yr Author Clamps have come off..H-F clamp has been exchanged for a new. As the old clamp has gone limp... Set on it's side, for now.. Through dovetails to be made on the ends of the stretchers..details.. Will work on the joints later.... Stay tuned...
February 22, 20233 yr Author One done.. So...this morning, turned the project around to work on the other end...clamped it to the bench.. I don't want things to be a-wiggling around...Combo square the carry the lines around... On the outside, and.. Along with how deep to cut..match the thickness of the stretcher, I hope...Next? Not a fan of broom-handled saws...you have to have a guide-finger against the blade, otherwise these tend to wobble around..Make 3 cuts...including one in the middle...Used as a relief cut...because.. That big old chisel is about to do some chopping....Hammer was handy, is all. The 4-in-hand file to clean up things, once most of the waste is gone... Then a dry fit to show where any tight spots are...on BOTH ends of the stretcher...once that is done... Glue, a brush to moosh it around, and that hammer with a block of Ash scrap.. Dovetail #1...and.... Dovetail #2.. This side is about done....may run the router with a round-over bit....before I flip this over, and start on the other stretcher.. Stay tuned..
February 22, 20233 yr Author Router work, this afternoon...the router? Round-over bit... All edges on this side have been rounded over, and sanded smooth...the clamp? Came after the router had run the ends, both ends...then some glue, again.. To put a stop to this split...then the top shelf was also sanded to 120 grit...with my ROS... So, now we are waiting on another glue up..to finish drying... Before I can work on installing that other stretcher.....and more router work... Stay tuned..
February 23, 20233 yr Author Clamps removed...8 of them...7 were needed to hold this in place.. This is a Backstop...to keep the Boss' stuff from sliding out the back of the shelf, and onto the floor... Rotate the unit...lay out #3 and #$ dovetails, and their Sockets...Bandsaw the tails. Use those to layout where to cut with the Dovetail Saw....wide chisel to chop out the waste... A "Proper" Tool Kit? Small combo square to check the dept, and square to the faces..File to adjust, unless the chisel was needed again.. Was a bit "Chippy" today...along with fighting this Memory Card Chip....#3 dovetail? No real issues...#4? 1 clamp? Hmmm.. Once the glue has cured..I'll plane this spot flush...then run the round-over bit...Then sand everything to 220 grit, for now... Set to 3"..how far off the floor these stretchers are... set to the angle of the tails...Stanley SW 6" Bevel Gauge...might be a No. 20? stay tuned....I just MIGHT have this done by March?
February 24, 20233 yr Author Tasks for this morning's Shoptime.... Level a few high spots... Plane was sold by Van Camp, BTW....next.. Router to do round-overs, palm sander to clean up after it... Was a bit tricky going around that corner... This is to be the Front of the Stand...then the Arches.. Then a final sanding... With this and 120 grit.... File says PIP, so... One end stained with Witch's Brew... A view of the top, looking towards the front, and.. A view of the back... Letting this dry a while....Witches Brew has 1/4 Pint of Gunstock Stain added in... May add a coat of varnish this evening? Stay tuned..
February 24, 20233 yr Some beautiful grain there. Too nice looking to be "hidden" under the end table.
February 24, 20233 yr Author It was made to match the table it will be sitting under....the thing only stands 12" tall....16" wide, by 26" long..... Have to lift the table up, in order to get the Purple Plastic Thingy out from under the table....Looking like either tomorrow or Sunday will be the "Delivery" date.... Then I can sort through all the leftovers, for March's Project.... Stay tuned...

February 25, 20233 yr So I'm gone for a few days and Steven does a complete whole project... I'm so unworthy Great job Steven, it is beautiful!
February 25, 20233 yr Author Ok..MOVING DAY!....had to move this UGLY thing out of the way, first (after carrying the new shelf upstairs) Then sweep the site clean ( found a Penny,AND a Dime!) and have the site inspected by the Inspector.. Once she passed it...I can slide the new shelf in place...under the guidance of the Boss.. As HER recliner is on the other side of this table..."little more THAT way" All moved in, and ready to be loaded up! Project Complete!
February 25, 20233 yr I'd say it's purrrfect. With that 11 cents, you're on your way to a new tool for the shop too. Edited February 25, 20233 yr by Grandpadave52
