Popular Post steven newman Posted February 13, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted February 13, 2023 Well, the Boss wants a shelf under her end table....to replace that UGLY, plastic tub with a lid thingy....and wants the shelf a bit lower, too.. Hauled 3 planks to the shop.. Yeah...I have seen better ones... Going to take some selective cutting.. Some will be heading for the burn barrel...lay out a bunch of cut lines... As I need 3 @ 1 x 6 x 26", and 6@ 1 x 6 x 12" Goal being to have a 1 x 16 x 26" panel for the shelf, and two panels @ 1 x 16 x 12" for the legs....was a bit awkward to use the tablesaw, so.. We have ways...Disston No. 112, 7ppi crosscut. And a VERY COMFY, well worn handle...I cut the 26" long pieces first.. These are rough sawn...will need a bit of work to get flat and smooth...right now, this is a bit too wide.. Then, whatever was left over, was cut up for the leg blanks.. For right now, I'll set these aside, and work on the main panel... Cleared for action. Need a Jointer.. Junior Jack to help out... One of the 3 blanks was narrower than the other 2, made that the center of the panel. I Jointed both edges, and then flattened both faces...As for the other 2...also got face planed..but..only one edge was jointed...as the other edgewas getting a little trim....about 3/4" ..then it was jointed... Flipped the board around a few times..looking for the best match of the grain... Work in Progress...2 out of 3...left one? May get moved a bit more....as for how close to 16" width? Close enough for the girls I run around with... Sunday Morning...Clamps & Cauls...even brought a NEW glue bottle to the shop! Middle... Other end.. And a view of the top.. So..how well does the grain line up? letting this sit a day or 2...right now, it needs to be off of my tablesaw...as I will be needing it, again... Note on the clamps...2 go under, out near the ends..the 3 goes over, and is about centered....seems to work best for the large panels I make... Stay tuned.. Popular Post 4DThinker Posted February 13, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted February 13, 2023 Thanks for the illustrated tale! I appreciate the step by step as I know it takes extra time to stop and take photos after each step. Can't get myself to stop for photos once in a production mode. Need a photographer to assume that assignment but not sure there is room for another soul in my shop when I'm in there. 4D HARO50, steven newman, Thad and 3 others 4 1 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted February 13, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 13, 2023 What the other face of the top shelf panel looks like.. Then spent about an hour..cross cutting, ripping, more cross cutting and ripping..and some face planing...and some jointing.. Glue up time..again.. one leg in the clamps...had to keep checking until these were the same width as the top shelf... Bench vise as a 3rd Hand.... Trying to get these panels flat....Going to let both legs sit a day or 3....then clean things up...and lay out for dovetails... Stay tuned... Cal, lew, Larry Buskirk and 5 others 8 Quote
Popular Post 4DThinker Posted February 13, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted February 13, 2023 Flashback. Last time I had a struggle helping a student glue up boards that didn't want to lay flat it turned out the fence on the jointer she had used was off square by a few degrees. We flipped ever other one over, then used cauls wrapped with packing tape to keep the boards from sliding as the clamps were tightened. Last time a student made their own cauls without consulting anyone they ended up glued to the panel. Always a fun challenge to see what gives up some wood when you knock off stuck cauls. Thankfully the clamping cauls lost most of the time. steven newman, p_toad, Grandpadave52 and 4 others 6 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted February 14, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 14, 2023 Both leg blanks are out of the clamps...glue lines cleaned up, both panels flattened at least close enough...(New camera is coming this Thursday...) Panels have been squared up...one edge needed planed, so that both panels are the same width... Came time to cut out the feet profiles...Center point of the panels is 8" from either side. Marked that. Had one of the cauls drilled for a 3" screw...wanted a 2" wide foot, marked that...marked the caul and drilled a hole for a pencil to fit through....Drew the radius...then bandsawed to the lines.. Leg blank #2 needed a little more flattening...it did not like that, so it split.. So, NOW I'm waiting on glue to dry, again....in the meantime... The 3 pipe clamps have been removed...but not the cauls, just yet....panel is sitting on top of the tablesaw, for now...need to clean up the glue lines on it, see about how square it is...and set a marking gauge to how ever thick (as a brick?) the panel is...so I can start to lay out the dovetails...waiting on the POS camera to get charged back up.... The way things were going, you'd have thought today was a Monday Stay tuned.. May try again, later..stay tuned for more updates lew, Thad, Grandpadave52 and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted February 14, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 14, 2023 OK, try again...This is too wide and too tall to sit in the end vise.. So....we have ways.. Seems to work quite well, this way... A few layout tools..an old saw.. And off we go.... Be sure to mark the waste, and have something to sit on, while running the saw.. Laid out and saw the Pins first...then chop out the waste,, clean the pins up, and use them to mark out the tails...tomorrow Blank is 16" wide....and that be a LOT of saw work... As for the Radius Jig? Simple as can be...I need a screwdriver to move that screw....had to grind a bit on the pencil, to just barely fit in the hole,,,no wiggles allowed. Popular Post steven newman Posted February 15, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 15, 2023 1 hour in the shop, today...re-arrange things to do a wee bit of chopping... Needed a "backstop. A selection of chisels, and something to whack them with.. Used this to deepen the lines a bit..to give the chisels a place to start.. That clamp is a repair...Had a piece flip out on me...The pad is right about in the middle of the chip This is a LOT of pins to chop out...I start from the outside face, go in about halfway down. flip this thing over, and finish chopping out the waste.. LOTS of chips, too....right now, waiting on this to cure.. Before I can start on Leg #2...which is now out of the clamps (again) and flattened (again).... Stay tuned.. lew, HARO50, Cal and 3 others 6 Quote

Transferring from one leg to another..SHARP Pencil IS required...then Switch things around, ready to finish the layouts, and use a saw... Guess which one needs a "refill"? Popular Post 4DThinker Posted February 17, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted February 17, 2023 (edited) So camera send photos to PC without actually plugging in a cable or taking the media card out to insert in the PC eh? I'd shout "Magic!" if I hadn't come across a wifi-enabled media card many years ago. All the photos look great though. Hard to see the level of white glue in a white glue bottle, so I'm betting the bottle carrier with cap remover is needing a refill. 4D Edited February 17, 2023 by 4DThinker lew, Cal, steven newman and 2 others 4 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted February 18, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 18, 2023 6 Guinness Extra STOUT are/were in the fridge...was a BAD day in the shop...today. Guinness count is now down to 4 left.. Sawing was too hateful.. But..when I went to chop out the waste. . Snap. right in the middle...then had to fight cauls and clamps while gluing this back together... Tried to saw the tails..on the bandsaw...wound up hand sawing the last 4.... A few too many cuts, BTW....then tried to dry fit the pins to this set of tails... Split again....Caul that WAS holding a repair from yesterday....took off with the flake I was trying to glue back in place,,,grrrrr..left it as is.. Cal, Grandpadave52, lew and 2 others 5 Quote

4DThinker Posted February 18, 2023 Report Posted February 18, 2023 While I always enjoy photo essays of a woodworking project, my first glance at this thread thought it read "elf under an end table". That reminded me of a student who had me VCarve a city maze scene of an imaginary city with castles and caves and bridges and such on the underside of her dining table design. The project description was to imagine 50 years in the future and design a family heirloom that would still be useful and desirable in 50 years. The city scape was for her children and grandkids who surely would enjoy playing under the table and discovering the world down there. Any way I can convince you to carve an elf under your shelf? Just for anyone who might enjoy finding it there. 4D Grandpadave52, steven newman, Cal and 1 other 3 1 Quote

steven newman Posted February 19, 2023 Author Report Posted February 19, 2023 Hmmm...Waste Removal Tools, today... And, what they were working on.. The reason for that 18" clamp..was because this dang thing was trying to split, again...mooshed some glue down into the crack...and clamp it back together.. Leg#1? has been fitted to the top, glued in place..and squared up.. Another plank was hauled to the shop...needed a pair of 26" long stretchers... Just chilling out, while they settle down...trying to remove the bow...Plank WAS 1 x 6 x 6' One section wasn't worth the effort, and I have a 15" long 1 x 5 as a leftover...the two remaining planks are NASTY looking...maybe ripped down the center, and glued to some good wood, for a live edge table top? Not much else... Larry Buskirk, Grandpadave52 and Cal 3 Quote
