Bottom panel is to be a 1/4" plywood panel....rather than have it sit in grooves...it will sit on something called "slips".   In this case...1/4" x 3/8" strips..

1890529548_FridayAfternoon4slips.JPG.bf4eb4dae1eacc29a3152786e0472427.JPG

That get mitered at each corner..

410955543_FridayAfternoonhighspot.JPG.8988653ffc3f0f6e7bb4a84f569cf267.JPG

First off, I need to clean and level all the corners..checking for square, and any high spots..plane to "adjust"

275935033_FridayAfternoonleveling.JPG.0cce633d591c108a06606dd89a8d1b56.JPG

Then sit the box on it's top...

2033694236_FridayAfternoon3rdhand.JPG.f077875af56c57aaefdca4af4e91d3ba.JPG

Mitrebox to miter the ends of the longer slips..

100451659_FridayAfternoondryfitslips.JPG.22afe193853f0e3772e707bc4cddf5f4.JPG

Dry fit...then clamps and glue..

1407186153_FridayAfternoon2slipglueup.JPG.eb4ccfc323dc1b452a0054047349080a.JPG

Both needed a slight trim before they would fit..we have ways..

1975226371_FridayAfternoonmitercuttrimmer.JPG.c922ad5d086f537e4c09fb170006c953.JPG

Can sand whatever size "hair" I need to remove..and still be at 45 degrees..

Was able to resaw the Live Edge plank down..

1989974689_FridayAfternoonlidparts.JPG.49bc23b831fd8fea0b2cd95e0f00a4a5.JPG

To 5/8" thick, to match the other 2 sticks....parts for the lid.

This morning....removed the clamps for a bit...level the edges..

1749037117_Sat.Morn4slipneedscut.JPG.2ff9bbb849d81622108f6c2871c89edc.JPG

Ain't he cute?    And start to work on the end slips..

1020934578_Sat.Morn3slip.JPG.d078f3aa60f70050f2fde43edda9c957.JPG

Getting there..

5958125_Sat.Morntoohigh.JPG.b2272ed5ea02b19a69a39ac795d824e4.JPG

Tap that end down a hair....then the other end.   Then glue and clamps, again..

31576379_Sat.Mornslipsgluedup.JPG.b4f9e013a45f21e91e0342b891904ecd.JPG

And let sit awhile...Had a sheet of plywood at the ready...slipped it under the box..

1927099974_Sat.Mornneedslaidout.JPG.10a942ca04f2c2640852821efd68cc74.JPG

Then reach down inside..

1505364202_Sat.Morncutlines.JPG.a43511edc3460741e1b30e351fd1f6f9.JPG

Pencil to trace around where to cut...bandsaw to remove the waste..

1724036759_Sat.Mornbottomtrimmed.JPG.140ccf130794efbd0c9f6d017bc8d69e.JPG

Lay the box over onto it's side...and give the panel a try..

1023548135_Sat.Morntestfit.JPG.24f7a26129ba4aae6e63193fa16be04a.JPG

Couple wavy spots....plane to flatten.   Can't install just yet, until them clamps are gone.

Mitrebox swung back to 90 degrees...have a few cross cuts to do...

343707291_Sat.MornLidcollar.JPG.9725736c436abca59137965106348b70.JPG

Front and both sides of the lid...and a suggestion on how to join them...need to "fill in" the center..

1551667016_SatMornlidpanel.JPG.4c6a3442ab41b4c4a3c3f274988be75e.JPG

Need to glue this up, too...

1847687443_Sat.Mornpanelgluedup.JPG.c6263be60751a19295ffc58fbd7f4f81.JPG

So...that is it for a while...need to bring the Super-Scooper back to the shop..

1747415014_SatMornCleanupaisle2.JPG.981bfb52378d7fff492366744e4e2716.JPG

Something to do while on Laundry Detail, later today..now that the scrap can is empty, again...

1654366044_Firepit.1sthalf.JPG.76e8f891003fb15f749b5a2ba7a6c2c6.JPG

I can get the floor of the shop cleaned up...wasn't any room left in the can....

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

I cannot believe you have scrap. Nice progress . My scrap barrels usually wait til cooler weather

Panel out of the clamps..needed cleaned up a bit...

1804789612_WorkingSundaypanelunclamped.JPG.2132eb439aed1da6d3083490130b583f.JPG

And trimmed down square..THEN the rebates were done...more like tongues..

1281661828_WorkingSundayrebatestarted.JPG.3257fcaefdb2ac6d140a64d1a68c411f.JPG

Easy to do...takes a while, though....only 3 edges to do..

1842242974_WorkingSundayrebatesdone.JPG.04ca1bbe42f89bfc095dd8df729bb31c.JPG

the 4th one doesn't need one....dry fit?

511236478_WorkingSundaydryfit.JPG.ead2c9b0deda11608172d3210bf1e120.JPG

Then some glue and a few clamps?

603387122_WorkingSundaygluedup.JPG.8806585653f7203c2f595e0d5b4adff8.JPG

Might as well glue the bottom panel of the box, too....bead of glue brushed out on the tops of the slips, set the panel down into the glue...but, how to clamp it in place?    A "weighty" question..

143651881_WorkingSundaypanelclamps.JPG.62f734bc0a879784c7f481f714ba2fde.JPG

How about 20 pounds of hand planes?   Let this sit a day....

Stay tuned..

Lid came out of the clamps...planes were put away...except for that Millers Falls No.8...:ChinScratch:

Needed to trim the lid to size...:SaluteandRun:

901264886_Trim-a-lidcuttosize.JPG.d57838e2cbaec876294e9d436964c020.JPG

Set the box onto the lid...centered up...the shorter edge was set flush with the box.   Line marked to cut the excess off.  Plane to smooth out the cut a bit...

Something like this?   The back edge will be flush with the back of the box...maybe later today, I can install some hardware?:WonderScratch:

Somewhere in all of this...

Hinges...

May go with a surface mount, again...as for a latch?

163149039_Whichhardwarelatches.JPG.d731cd5b4ae3a3c740bbc91ef8fd2ef4.JPG

Hmmmm, large, or small?   :WonderScratch:

Debate is also about whether handles on the ends are needed..

1603042257_Whichhardwarehandlemaybe.JPG.a07884e2f63333a4c528a35423ea8132.JPG

Or..not?:WonderScratch:

Might see about building a lift-out tray, too.....:ChinScratch:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

Really like the layout design for top. Adds great complmetary contrast.

FWIW, my vote small latch, no handles.

Box was too big to use the bench vise...almost....we have other ways..

1151504499_LidWorkcentered.JPG.3f82597123b7a249163c258ad6d1648a.JPG

Since the back of the lid and the back of the drawer have to be flush with each other....and I want them to STAY THAT WAY long enough to install the hinges..

Set them both on the top of the tablesaw, center things up..and clamp it, Jed....Take this over to the bench vise...flip over..:SaluteandRun:

901541856_LidWorkclamped.JPG.d8829501bf68dec8b2d406c299d7207c.JPG

Install the big, half round part, once I figured out where it went...3 screws.   The part that latches the lid down?

1383300172_LidWorklatchinstalledlid.JPG.3843d64dd179401c0634263a735d96cc.JPG

3 screws to install on the underside of the lid...so when the lid is closed and latched.:OldManSmiley:

Transform these 5 parts into a tray, with a center handle...not sure about the corner joint, yet..:WonderScratch:

Stay tuned :cowboy:

I like it. This will be awesome when you get the finish applied. Just a plain, cool design and look.

The Zero Clearance Overlay was broken..

Wow, what a great idea. I know these ideas must have been around since Moses but they are new to me.

For milling tricky slats, really thin ones, I can make a "drop-over combination deck / fence overlay". As long as the fence is inset into the overlay - dado or equiv. - the tiny gap at its base and the deck disappears.

Very clean, Steve.

The new way I'm managing glue, got that idea from you. The size of the plane matches the size of the job. I'm not affixing a truss bridge together, just a light tray for earrings and such. Enough glue to keep the seam as invisible as possible. Heck, the wood was timbered 200 years ago, it's dry. Glue wicks in instantly. So I use a small metal mint tin lid and a library card to apply a uniform strip of glue opposite the edge hardest to clean up, if squeeze-out occurs. No glue on the inside showing edge; it makes its way there with clamping.
