August 13, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Bottom panel is to be a 1/4" plywood panel....rather than have it sit in grooves...it will sit on something called "slips". In this case...1/4" x 3/8" strips.. That get mitered at each corner.. First off, I need to clean and level all the corners..checking for square, and any high spots..plane to "adjust" Then sit the box on it's top... Mitrebox to miter the ends of the longer slips.. Dry fit...then clamps and glue.. Both needed a slight trim before they would fit..we have ways.. Can sand whatever size "hair" I need to remove..and still be at 45 degrees.. Was able to resaw the Live Edge plank down.. To 5/8" thick, to match the other 2 sticks....parts for the lid. This morning....removed the clamps for a bit...level the edges.. Ain't he cute? And start to work on the end slips.. Getting there.. Tap that end down a hair....then the other end. Then glue and clamps, again.. And let sit awhile...Had a sheet of plywood at the ready...slipped it under the box.. Then reach down inside.. Pencil to trace around where to cut...bandsaw to remove the waste.. Lay the box over onto it's side...and give the panel a try.. Couple wavy spots....plane to flatten. Can't install just yet, until them clamps are gone. Mitrebox swung back to 90 degrees...have a few cross cuts to do... Front and both sides of the lid...and a suggestion on how to join them...need to "fill in" the center.. Need to glue this up, too... So...that is it for a while...need to bring the Super-Scooper back to the shop.. Something to do while on Laundry Detail, later today..now that the scrap can is empty, again... I can get the floor of the shop cleaned up...wasn't any room left in the can.... Stay tuned..
August 13, 20223 yr I cannot believe you have scrap. Nice progress . My scrap barrels usually wait til cooler weather
August 16, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Panel out of the clamps..needed cleaned up a bit... And trimmed down square..THEN the rebates were done...more like tongues.. Easy to do...takes a while, though....only 3 edges to do.. the 4th one doesn't need one....dry fit? Then some glue and a few clamps? Might as well glue the bottom panel of the box, too....bead of glue brushed out on the tops of the slips, set the panel down into the glue...but, how to clamp it in place? A "weighty" question.. How about 20 pounds of hand planes? Let this sit a day.... Stay tuned..
August 16, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Lid came out of the clamps...planes were put away...except for that Millers Falls No.8... Needed to trim the lid to size... Set the box onto the lid...centered up...the shorter edge was set flush with the box. Line marked to cut the excess off. Plane to smooth out the cut a bit... Plane and sanders to flatten and smooth the lid....best face will wind up being the "show" face.. Something like this? The back edge will be flush with the back of the box...maybe later today, I can install some hardware? Somewhere in all of this... Seemed to have found a sharp corner, of some sort.... Hinges... May go with a surface mount, again...as for a latch? Hmmmm, large, or small? Debate is also about whether handles on the ends are needed.. Or..not? Might see about building a lift-out tray, too..... Stay tuned..
August 16, 20223 yr Really like the layout design for top. Adds great complmetary contrast. FWIW, my vote small latch, no handles.
August 16, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Box was too big to use the bench vise...almost....we have other ways.. Since the back of the lid and the back of the drawer have to be flush with each other....and I want them to STAY THAT WAY long enough to install the hinges.. Set them both on the top of the tablesaw, center things up..and clamp it, Jed....Take this over to the bench vise...flip over.. Clamp that front lip in the vise...Do a bit of lay out.. Drill a few pilot holes, with a cordless drill.. Add a few TINY screws.. Hinges are now installed...leaves the latch to do...more lay outs.. Install the big, half round part, once I figured out where it went...3 screws. The part that latches the lid down? 3 screws to install on the underside of the lid...so when the lid is closed and latched. . It is almost hidden away under the lid....Next? Transform these 5 parts into a tray, with a center handle...not sure about the corner joint, yet.. Stay tuned
August 17, 20223 yr I like it. This will be awesome when you get the finish applied. Just a plain, cool design and look.
August 17, 20223 yr On 8/8/2022 at 4:24 PM, steven newman said: The Zero Clearance Overlay was broken.. Wow, what a great idea. I know these ideas must have been around since Moses but they are new to me. For milling tricky slats, really thin ones, I can make a "drop-over combination deck / fence overlay". As long as the fence is inset into the overlay - dado or equiv. - the tiny gap at its base and the deck disappears.
August 18, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Build-a-tray 101 While the Witch's Brew finishes airing out.. Sat this out of the way...selected 4 sides for a tray and a few tools... Plus a few of these things... Had to make sure the sides of the tray-to-be will actually fit inside the box.. Had to plane a few edges... And, flatten a couple faces...wanted all 4 to at least match up.. .Time for a bit of lay out.. Had to sharpen up that marking knife, too...then a bit of saw work... Followed by a bit of chisel work.. use these to trace around, to lay out the tails...saw and chisel..then a dry fit... Then repeat for the next corner... 2 corners done, foot was hurting...decided this was enough, for today..... Went up to the Local Urgent Care Center to have the right foot seen to....the thick pad of skin at the ball of the foot, had decided to split open....They scraped the pad down..ointment and a bandaid...and go pick up a bottle of pills...Old Infantryman's Foot.... Maybe tomorrow, I can get the other 2 corners done, and cobble a center divider...with a handle? Stay tuned...
August 19, 20223 yr Popular Post Very clean, Steve. The new way I'm managing glue, got that idea from you. The size of the plane matches the size of the job. I'm not affixing a truss bridge together, just a light tray for earrings and such. Enough glue to keep the seam as invisible as possible. Heck, the wood was timbered 200 years ago, it's dry. Glue wicks in instantly. So I use a small metal mint tin lid and a library card to apply a uniform strip of glue opposite the edge hardest to clean up, if squeeze-out occurs. No glue on the inside showing edge; it makes its way there with clamping. I'm of the opinion. To pursue my vice, my Next step is a heavy Duty bench with vise.
August 21, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Other 2 corners were done... Saw work... Chisel work... Trace around to lay out the pins, this time around...repeat as need be... Dry fit the 4 corners...lay out for a dado.. Hand saw to cut..then a sharp chisel.. To push the waste out the back.. Get both dados done, dry fit the handle for length.. Then use this mess to lay out the plywood panel for the tray's bottom... Then go shopping...hardware bin was running low, after all... And.. And... Yesterday was Garage Sales....maybe this afternoon, I can try for a glue up..once the tray's handle has been shaped... Stay tuned...
August 23, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Needed a starter hole, for this. . To make this... To a glue up.. Went from one glue up...to a second one.. Glued on the bottom of the tray...clamps came off today...needed the edges cleaned/trimmed... Plane and a sander....handle needed a bit of sanding.. Dremel to soften a few spots. Needed a way for the tray to sit about halfway down... Cut four dowels, 3/8" x 3" and glue one in each corner... Then see how well the tray sits inside... That should do the trick...still thinking about handles for the box... Thinking these might work? Waiting on glue to dry...might give everything inside the box a coat of Witch's Brew...later. Then see about a coat of Clear gloss Poly.... Stay tuned..
August 24, 20223 yr Like the dowels as support stops idea. I'll try to cram that in my brain for the future. I really like how the lid came out after finishing. Still haven't "heard" what treasures get to call this one home?? Is it behind Door #3?
