August 8, 20223 yr Popular Post Still had a stash of resaws to use up...or burn....prefer to use up, so.. And... Figure I could just glue these up into book-matched panels...for a Frame & Panel box/chest? Clamps and cauls.... Bench vise as a 3rd hand, and as a pair of cauls.. More clamps and cauls..might use this one for and end panel..means I need one for the other end Not too sure about that knot, yet.. let these sit a day...then remove the clamps..and nothing flies apart... The 2 longer panels, will have to trim these down to match each other...as for the other 2.. Need to trim all of these down.. To get rid of that knot, for one thing.. Set the rip fence to ~5" width...ran the best of each panel through...set aside the 3" cut-offs for later... Lengths...ends are 6" long, and the 2 sides are ~9" long.. Then try to plane the glue joints until they disappear.. Almost gone? Also needed to get them all FLAT.. A little more off of the right edge? repeat 3 more times.. Plane is a Stanley No.3, Type 11....as it was still out on the bench... Upstairs, there are 2 planks...one has a live edge...7/8" x 6 x 65-1/2" The other is a bit plain..and a foot shorter I figure I can cut the best section out...for a lid....maybe do a glue-up? Rest of the plank will get ripped down into parts for the frames. Some of which might get a bit "showy"? Spalted Maple? set the fence for 1-1/2" width..run a few strips to start up with.. Might be enough..we'll see... Next time? More rips...a LOT of cross cuts (16 parts !) and more rips...then see about grooves, tenons... Stay tuned..

August 8, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Up-dates...seems that 1-1/2" was a tad too wide....parts are now 1-3/8" wide...Did a bunch of cross cuts.. Just getting started.. Noticed that the parts looked a little too "klunky" aka THICK...as in 7/8" thick....didn't quite look right...decided to thin them all to 5/8" thick.. There was a problem The Zero Clearance Overlay was broken.. Means I had to stop, and make a new one.. Cut a piece of 1/4" plywood to size.. Lower the saw blade all the way down.. (IF you noticed the factory plate, you will understand why I use the overlay) Slide the plywood over until the left edge is fully supported, and clamp the plywood down with the rip fence...then turn the saw on, and slowly crank the blade all the way up... Shut the saw off. THEN I can adjust to the fence setting I need.. Which was 5/8" between the blade and the fence. Cleat under the fence helps square the fence, double check anyway.. I have a special Push Stick for running narrow parts through, instead of me fingers..test the cut.. Then run the other 15 parts through... Next episode? Need 16 grooves milled, and 16 tenons...( but not 16 candles?) Stay tuned..
August 9, 20223 yr Author Popular Post I suppose I had better do an update...or 3? Parts are too small fro the Stanley 45 to work over...we have ways...decided to mill the grooves, then Rebate the inside of the panels to match the grooves...took a bit of fussing, cussing.. Tablesaw also milled the tenons... Sunday's workload was piling up.. Monday? Not much going on... Needed to reset the Mortise Jig...from 3/4" down to 5/8" width. Sticking out to lay out a mortise....I also dug up a mortise chisel to use.. Then quit while I was ahead on a Monday.. As for today? Was rather busy morning...and a lot of pictures taken...before the back and the camera decided it was quitting time Stay tuned...having a bit of Lunch, then ..

August 9, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Before a mortise was done....today.. Figured it would help IF I knew where the bottom rail would be...and might as well se about adding some feet bandsaw was rather busy... 4 done, 4 to go....looking a bit rough? We have ways... Messy, but works...Then decided to work on the corner joints at bit... 4 get that tongue detail, the other 4 get a groove for it to fit into...adjustments were needed.. A Router..Plane to make all the tongues the same thickness...and.. For the ones that were a bit too tall.. We have ways.. try the fit again.. Then decided to at least haunch the tenons.. Then...lay out Mortise #1.. Then chop that out.and a dry fit... 1 done...15 more to chop... Stay tuned..
August 9, 20223 yr Author Popular Post 1500 hrs..to...1630 hrs...then the fingers started to cramp up...second session in the shop came to a halt! Getting slow, in me dotage? Only 7 mortises got done... Both of the ends are now dry fitted...no glue...was a LOT of this sort of thing going on.. And used each one.... Dry fits...bunch of them...trying to get rid of them gaps... Have to use the stiles from the front and back..so the clamps don't "slip & slide"...may do a glue up tomorrow? Stay tuned..
August 9, 20223 yr Author have since wandered back to the shop...those 2 assemblies have been glued up...waiting on the glue to cure overnight.. Glue, glue brush, cauls...LOTS of clamps....and a mallet as needful....and a bit of cussing for good measure... Photos tomorrow, after the clamps come off... Stay tuned..
August 10, 20223 yr Author Photos? Well, one is sitting on the bench...all glued up...cauls to keep things flat.. The other one is sitting over on the tablesaw... Also with cauls to keep things flat Need the tablesaw back, tomorrow..have a job for it.... Stay tuned..
August 10, 20223 yr Author Been referred to as a "jethro" a few times Clamps have been removed... Where that rebate goes past the rail....they will get a contrasting filler strip, glued into place Both can stand up on their own 2 feet.. Trying to decide which "face" looks the best... Maybe later today, I will work on the front and back frames... Stay tuned...
August 10, 20223 yr Author Panels...for the front and the back.. Were too long, and too wide, and... Trimmed for most of the "defects" on the tablesaw...and got a kick-back in return...side of the right hand will have a bruise...otherwise fine. Test the fit.. Panels need to be narrowed a hair more... Hand plane to do that..thought it would be safer? Came back too far, plane dropped down, and the finger tried to plane a corner of the panel...oW! Panels are square, and the right size, NOW. Time to.. Dig a few holes..got 4 done... A bit of a dry fit. Haunched tenons were mis-cut...but, since they will be here on the bottom...set this aside with the 2 glued up frames... Where they will all be out of the way... This mess can wait a day...too sore at the moment...didn't even do a glue-up...yet.. Was just one of THEM days.. Stay tuned..
August 11, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Late last night...slipped down to the shop ( got bored, just sitting around) and did a glue up.. Double cauls to keep things flat...an extra clamp to pull the top and bottom rails into place All just to help out the 2 main clamps...let this sit awhile... Today's tasks? Use these to lay out the last 4 mortises... Chop the mortises, try for a glue up.... Maybe later, I can see about using this... To make a live edge lid? Might even try to thin it down a bit...to 5/8" thick? Stay tuned..am sure there will be some cussing involved..
August 12, 20223 yr Author Popular Post last side...dry fitted together.. Wasn't easy...issues with that panel... Being a bit too wide...we have ways... Clamp the panel into the vise...3 or 4 strokes along the long edges...check for fit a couple times... That's better....then glue, glue brush, clamps and cauls.. Helps when there is a 3rd hand ..handy...then I can add the cauls to keep things flat.. Then let this sit MOST of the day....until... Glue had set and dried enough I could remove the clamps....and then the assembly and glue up began.. about 19 or so clamps? and.. And...it is even square! Let this sit overnight...then see about a bottom and a lid...and clean this thing up..? Stay tuned..
