Chess set for grandson

This is a continuation of a post in the "your workbench" topic of the General Woodworking forum.  Since the project has, for now, become a wood turning project, I decided to continue it here.  If it more rightly should stay in the Gen WW forum, John or Lew, feel free to move it.  I now have all the pawns and rooks made.  I'm avoiding making the knights for now.  Being frequently referred to as the other end of the horse, I need to practice before making the horses' head for the "keeper" piece.  Wish me luck on getting the picture of my progress to date posted correctly.

Will get them out tomorrow and scan

What a wonderful start Tom! I love it! And it belongs right here where it's at, nobody needs to move anything. A chess set has been on my bucket list too, you inspire me, thanks sir!

Have searched and cannot find the plans. Might have given to someone since I was not doing another. Will continue to look.

I appreciate your effort, but don't stress over it.  If you find them, great.  If not, thanks for looking.

Wow.  Lew, there is a lot of information there.  It almost looks like the gentleman was researching for a doctorate in turning chess pieces.  I will have to settle for a "C" from elementary school.  Maybe that page could go in our Wiki section?  Anyway, thanks for that post.  I am currently using the info and profiles in the duplicator link you posted earlier.  I think the section on knights will probably bail me out on those pieces.

This is an article in American Woodturner Which may be of interest.AW3501p18-25.pdfAW3501p18-25.pdf

Nice article @Gerald Schematic is sweet.

I found the plans on the office computer. Will also try to post in a blog. Several pages here so just feel free to peruse it. The originals came from Larry Jenkins on the old Wood forums . I think he was also here for a while. There is some extemporaneous info in some of the sheets as I did this before I new how to get rid of that stuff. I placed some notes in margins as to blank size and base diameters I used also.

I finally got all the chess pieces turned.  Long process.  For most of them, I turned 2 or 3 practice pieces, and even then I sometimes had to remake the "keeper" piece because I didn't like the first one.  Anyway, here is my "family".

Now, on to the board.

Those knights came out fantastic!

I made a chess board for a friend. I thought I could simply glue contrasting squares together. Big mistake. Warped like crazy. Ended up making very thin squares and gluing them to a 3/4" plywood substrate.

That came out rather good. I cannot eve remember how I did the board, but I think Glued log strips alternating then cut across to get alternating squares. Now for final flip every other one end for end. Funny as long as it took to finish that set I did not do any PIP.
