Chess set for grandson

Thanks Lew and Gerald.  You would both laugh if you saw my first practice blank for the knights.  I cut the heads first, then went to the lathe to turn the bases that were between the heads on a single blank, and realized that I had no material left to mount between the head stock and tail stock.  I learned rather quickly to turn the bases first, and then work on the heads.

Those came out great Tom

Okay.  Been a long time coming, but I finally finished the chess board.  Just in time too.  I finished the project yesterday, and my grandson got home yesterday.  I will try to get my pictures posted, but I don't always have success in that.

This was also my first attempt at flocking.  The trays are flocked in the "cubicles", but all the external surfaces, the sides, bottom, and tops of the cubicles were painted using the colored adhesive that was used to adhere the flocking fibers.  I learned that the colored adhesive was not paint, and was not designed to be used as such.  But, by the time I figured that out, I was committed to using it.

Absolutely gorgeous work, Tom. Your grandson should be ecstatic.

Great job on the set

Great work! He’ll be overjoyed!

Yeah, he's pretty happy with it.  He didn't know I was doing this.  Complete surprise to  him.  Thanks all for the kind words and encouragement.

Looks fantastic.  A treasure for him for sure.

A family heirloom!

Very nice Tom ! That’s a beautiful chess set. I built one once but chickened out and bought the chess pieces. The knights came out beautiful.

Thanks Paul I appreciate that.  Lew sent me a link for a set of plans using a duplicator.  I don't have a duplicator, but the process for the knights was similar and it helped out greatly.  Once I pulled my head out.

I have the plans for a scroll sawn chess set. If and when scrollsawing proficiency becomes part of my skill set,  I may attempt to saw one for my grandson. I can only hope my board and integrated storage boxes will be as nice as tours, Tom.

Thanks Gene.  When the people whose work I already admire appreciate my work, it feels good.

That is beautiful Tom, lucky grandson!
