March 7, 20224 yr Popular Post Now that the road trip is over I’m moving the band saw over here. This was kind of a spur of the moment thing. Everything just sort of fell into place. My good friend made me an offer on my 17” bandsaw and at that moment I found a 24” Grizzly bandsaw on CL which is a modernized version of one we had in our shop before. I need the saw because we have a stash of Honduran mahogany in storage that is in very large chunks and now I can resaw it down to usable size. This was quite an ordeal getting the saw from about 350 miles away. It weighs in at about 900 lbs so getting it on and off the trailer took some planning. Many thanks to Static LV for coming over to help with the unloading. This saw has a 7.5 hp three phase motor so the next project is getting a 15 hp phase converter. There are several options. There is a used one on CL in LA for 800. We will se if it has the start up power I need. If I can find a reasonable 15hp 3ph motor I will just build one. They are very simple to build. So far the only ones I can find are more than the whole converter for sale in LA. If that one doesn’t have the start up capacity I can always modify it. Paul

Well done @StaticLV2. Holy moly Paul! That thing wouldn't fit in my driveway let alone my garage. All kidding aside, that saw looks pristine. Is the mobile base something you fabricated in advance or did it come with the saw? Well assuming it's a mobile base versus a bigger footprint with leveling feet?
March 7, 20224 yr Author Popular Post It’s just a pedestal I made this morning. It has some leveling feet which will allow me to bring it up to the same level as the table saw and router table. Not mobile at all. Paul

Looking forward to seeing this up and running as I'm sure you are as well. Good luck on the phase converter search.
March 7, 20224 yr That saw is a beast! I'm glad you were able to find it and pick it up without incident. Danl
March 8, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Today was an interesting day to say the least. I did get the saw positioned and level with the other tools. That went very well. Then about noon my wife noticed a sound of water in a bathroom which turned out to be a pipe leaking under the slab. Arghh. So starting tomorrow they arrive to repipe the whole house. Five days of fun. Paul

Hope all goes well.
March 13, 20224 yr Author Popular Post The phase converter arrived today but with all the plumbing issues here it will be a back burner project. I had an electrician friend of mine here today. He came over to observe the chaos and he offered to come over and do it for me in exchange for making his wife a cutting board. Seems like a good trade. I’ll pay for materials. I ordered all new blade brushes and guide bearings for it. They should be here by Wed along with the blades. Paul
March 13, 20224 yr Popular Post Paul, what size circuit will feed that phase convertor? Just curious.
March 13, 20224 yr Author This is my first time playing with a VFD so it’s going to be interesting to see how it performs in comparison to a rotary phase converter. Paul

If it’s a distance issue, it must be a LONG distance to get down to #4. NEC allows you to use #4 for a 100 amp single home residence. I bring this up because it may not be possible to get the #4 wire under the screw of the 40 amp breaker. Please keep me posted on this as I am sometimes capable of learning.
March 14, 20224 yr Author Good point Artie. The specs on the VFD say #4. The run to the VFD with the #4 is only about 24 inches. It’s right next to the panel. The run from the VFD to the saw is about 40 feet. The interesting part is that according to my VFD guru ( my son ) I should have rpm control over the motor. We shall see. Paul
March 14, 20224 yr Author Popular Post There it is. That’s the one I need. Thanks Gunny. Do they charge shipping ? Paul

Paul I am a BIG believer in adhering to manufacturers specs.
