Well, not ALL trades. He's an electrician, HVAC tech, robot tech, and a heavy machinery mechanic. Not engines. Just the mechanical parts. His field in the AF was pnuedraulics. Since he retired, he's been indulging his curiosity about everything ...except woodworking... He built a forge and loves blacksmithing, welding and bending metal. He is now employed by the AF to maintain the machines used in dis mantling moth balled aircraft. He gets enough side jobs to keep a less ambitious guy busy, too. Phyl and I aren't in the least proud of him. Edited December 27, 20214 yr by Gene Howe

I did the same as he is doing and moved into woodworking as a curiosity and ended up staying. Knowing the other trades helps with making tools and such. I moved into the basement as I got older and couldn't take the cold as much. Built my wood shop there.

With his metal working equipment, an air compressor, a refrigerator and, freezer, there's really not room for a woodworking shop. As it is, he has to move the vehicles out in order to do much metal work. He keeps threatening to enlarge his work area but, terrain and city bureaucracy is hindering him at this point.

Have him look into sheds, which here means a building with a wood floor. I can build all the sheds I want any size I want but my concrete floor building can only be 576 square feet. Go figure.

Mother's shed was built with a perimeter of 4x6 PT, and I filled in the center with crusher run. Next year the plan is to screed off a layer of stone dust and lay a "concrete" floor with those 18 x 18 x 2 pavers. At the time, plywood had stayed expensive and I sing the song of the daddy bird - cheep, cheep, cheep.
