I started with this small picture then kept playing around with Rapid Resizer making a slimmer taller picture I used for this next clock. I have one 3 1/2" push in clock movement I wanted to use before I order more movements.

Problem was the picture I started with was too short so I resized it and it came out too tall and fat then I resized it the last time and made a few small sections to help use up all the wood I had glued up for this project.

So this is what I ended up to carve and not wasting any of this nice maple.1305094317_IMG_20211115_182539499picturewastoofatandtolargeandtooshorttouseallthewood.jpg.c6b16cdbfa317044e14de930928d120d.jpg

I'm starting to get the feel of what I'm wanting when I start experimenting with Rapid Resizer1995768254_IMG_20211115_182012502startinganewprojectusingpicture.jpg.7df006d3d90e93304a373b5428d41684.jpg

I came real close not being able to push the scroll sawn pieces out of the 1 1/16" maple and I made about 16 or 18 small pieces of all the carving so I can grind, carve, the shapes I'm going to try and make before I'm through. I forgot to take a picture of all the pieces but I'll do that tomorrow.

You can see where I added two short sections of the picture to have some carving around the clock dial.

I find it helps if I leave the patterns on and use them to start the carving process.....might say I'm lazy but getting smarter at this so called carving exercise!!! I like the wood to be nice and thick to give me lots of highs and lows

I started this project this afternoon today and the end of tomorrow if I work in the shop tomorrow will make a big improvement on what it will look like!!!!

I'm following Patch. Keep the pics coming and your fingers safe.

You got a great start on it Jess :)

I'm following along for the journey, Jesse.

Not as much as I had planed but it never is.2146569677_IMG_20211116_174805586notasmuvhasIwantedtodobut.jpg.23f62db261015393af3e8c853846b6dd.jpg

Looking good so far Patch. Keep the updates coming.

BTW, amazing carving jobs on the pocket knife and tape measure too. They look real.

Starting the carving. I finally get to sit down and let the Dremel do the work.1543745290_IMG_20211117_114218584startingthecarving.jpg.5a9323befe9c52d4df416d6b85b0d7aa.jpg

The air grinder did all the grinding on the large inside piece.

I realize you have a single dimension pattern, BUT, your ability and vision to convert that to multi-dimensions is simply amazing Patch. I look at the flat view then to where you've taken it and just sit in awe. Keep updates coming; way to nasty here to do shop time.

Almost to the short rows!1176643224_IMG_20211118_123353898gettingtotheshortrows.jpg.5f43475b53f359134a61c499f04d624f.jpg

I think I will splurge on some of this new product Flexi-Con before I get through with this project?

Keep them coming Patch. I'm getting excited now too.

Dave I'm still so new to this carving when I have the same piece of each side to carve I need to try and carve them exactly the same as each other. The very two bottom pieces were the fifth and sixth pieces to carve and I was half finished with the sixth piece when I looked over and neither piece resembled each other. I didn't ruin the whole carving just yet for my first act of grinding away wood is only about 1/16" deep as I am grinding away the patterns picture for I still need reference points for later..

So any way I had to go back and start over first with piece 1 and 2 which would be the same looks and so on...So its always the same when I first start with a new project for I am in such a big hurry to see how things will look I kinda loose my little mind for a while.. like a kid with a new toy each and every time I go in to the shop with something new to try and make!!!

Like I said before, I start a new project with no plans, just a thought and maybe a picture.

This thing here was only a picture and 953503501_IMG_20210406_081636165amountofspaceImleavingbetweenlidandcup.jpg.8e36a5f2fd1fb6249b54255142360043.jpg

I decided I could make this if any one could and the one in the picture had lift off lids so that meant there had to be a hole drilled in the middle of that small turning and a medal rod inserted for the lid to swivel on.  And this was just some of the problems I encountered for the very first time in my life but hey. Its sitting on the bar with tootsie rolls for any one needing a snack. If you haven't seen this thing check out my projects...

I'm sure I bore these other folks to death but I can' see why other guys won't get started carving the way I like to carve.

It's one thing to carve carve two identical pieces but what your doing is one, then mirror image of the other. Shoot, I have trouble cutting two boards so they match let alone making mirror images of anything not to mention the degree of detail you incorporate. Can't speak for any of the others, but its NEVER boring to follow what you create.

Same here...  :)

I can't speak for the rest of the folks here Jess, but I sure don't find your posts boring!  Quite the contrary, I generally learn something with each new project you take on.

As for my attempting your style of carving, maybe one day...  I have a very long list of flat work projects to get through first, and that doggone Gunny keeps on posting up stuff that I need/want to do too!  And if I ever get finished with this house remodel - I will likely have to go back and start over to correct all the mistakes I've made in each room :o

But I sure do enjoy watching your progress and projects

Ditto, @Cal. We should keep notes. By now, I'd have a book!

Another step or two done! Cutting the hole for the movement use to be a chore.

This is the smallest clock I have built in a long time about 12 to 14" tall. I have a few sizes of maple edged glued and run through the planer. I build things the sizes I have laying there ready and it sure makes things go much faster.

this movement ready to slide in the hole runs about 7.50 and needs a 3" hole but is called a 3 1/2" insert. Then all it needs is the battery, double A.

Not thought about the color yet?

I vote for a medium brown stain.

Terri we got an e-mail from a person name Bailey Johnson and I thought is was some kind of a scam and almost deleted it. It never entered my little mind that she was changing her name.
