July 17, 20214 yr Popular Post I’ve been working on a hall bench my wife asked for. It’s going to be painted, so I chose to use pine I got from a local sawmill. Made a few mistakes, and did my best to hide them. Still in the building stage, but here are a couple of photos. comments and suggestions are always welcome.
July 17, 20214 yr Popular Post Looks like you got all under control at this point Pauly! Boy, Pine sure is being use a lot these days, with the skyrocketing lumber costs, Pine seems to be the darling of woodworkers once again. Not sure if that is why you went with Pine Pauly, more of a sidebar comment than directed at you. But the hall bench is nice, what do you plan to finish or paint with?
July 17, 20214 yr Popular Post Around here clear pine is priced up there with the expensive hardwoods. Nice bench, BTW.

It was a lot cheaper than Home Depot.

As I was talking to the Indian Motorcycle rep, my wife came up behind me holding that sigh above her head. I was wondering why everyone was laughing…until I turned around.

Well, the reason why I used pine is because of the cost and the fact that we will be painting it. I know that poplar takes paint very well, but that was even more expensive. I paid $1.70 per foot for the pine opposed to $3.95 per foot for poplar. These were the prices at the sawmill near me. There will be one door on the left side. I plan on insetting either some old barn wood for the inside panel,of the door and also for the backing of the case. This is make from a set of plans I’ve had for a while from Woodsmith magazine. im also going to change the mounding on the top to something different, because I think the top mounding makes it look to boxie.
July 21, 20214 yr Popular Post 2 pieces of unsolicited advice. A. Putty is your buddy. B. Putty and paint will make it what it ain't. Looks very good and I really do like the plan. Working on something like that for grandson's closet.

My wife likes the distressed look, so I use pine, and then I mar it with a variety of instruments (chisel edge, screwdriver ponts--flat and phil, keys, all the stuff that leaves a ding). Particularly with stain, it does age the piece. I only have one customer and I try to keep her happy. OTOH, we have a really lumpy couch. But, pine colors nicely (took a bit of 'sperimenting) with dye to match the rest of our furniture (mostly pine) and cupboards (maple). It just takes a bit of searching in the pile (big box) for the straight-grain pieces. I think of it as "ephermeral creativity".

I always told people if they bought pine furniture to make sure it was physically distressed. Pine will dent. Not if but when. And one dent mixed in with dozens is less obvious than one dent mixed in with none. The distressing tools I've seen vary from a ring with keys, nuts and washers to a hammer-like tool that looks like medieval torture instruments.an old post Years ago, I got a call from a regular retail customer. I went over and they said there were some kids running around the store over the weekend and they'd made a lot of dents in the top of a bar-top height table that they'd just put on the showroom floor. It was only a couple feet in diameter so I'm contemplating how on earth I'm going to get this fixed to be not noticeable. So I look at the 4 legs and each of them has exactly the same distress pattern, as do each of the legs on the barstools. All exactly once. Relieved, I tell the manager that the marks have been put there by the factory and they're supposed to be there. Whew. Edited July 21, 20214 yr by kmealy
August 15, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Well today I finally finished the hall bench. It came out pretty good, I just need to plane the door a little. This was painted using General Finishes “driftwood” milk paint. (again, thank you GF and thank you @Cliff!). I tried to make the back boards look like old weathered band board. I had some stain left over and the wife put it on. Everything is pine. For me, this was a very hard build…but I enjoyed every minute of it. My wife is awesome, she did the painting and staining and even helped me get it into the house. I got a big hug and whatever I want for dinner. Burger and home made fries….
August 15, 20214 yr It certainly turned out nice, well done! Your choice for dinner was spot on as well...at least in my opinion.
August 15, 20214 yr Love it. It looks Great~!!! I should do something like that. Our home is bleeding stinkin' ANCIENT and they weren't too keen on closets.
