Featured video Long after the Persians had beaten back the Crusaders, the technique for making the mighty swords that won those battles was mysteriously lost. A hundred years later, a lone horseshoer in Florida named Al Pendray started tinkering with steel recipes, determined to recreate the recipe for wootz. Popular Post John Morris Posted May 17, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 17, 2021 Well, finally heading back to work today, after a mandatory stay at home order by my employer since our home was struck with the big bad Covid. I was able to stay mainly billable by telecommuting, but it sure is going to be nice to get back to work as I know it, with my guys, in the field, crunching numbers, swinging hammers, and working with folks, I truly do miss it! Hope you all have a wonderful week ahead, and be safe in all you do, and please, share your projects with the rest of us here at The Patriot Woodworker community. Popular Post Gene Howe Posted May 17, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted May 17, 2021 Insulation in the tin can is complete. The difference in temperature between out side and in, is remarkable. It was 20° cooler at 15:00 yesterday. And, that's with just r13. Next job is stud walls, followed by wiring. Then, If I win the lottery, wall sheathing. 15/32 OSB is $51.08 per sheet! I need about 40 sheets, minimum. That's two grand. Maybe, by the time I need them, they'll be cheaper. lew, p_toad, Gunny and 6 others 6 3 Quote

This time of the year it varies. Last week we hit 104°. But, it's been hangin' around 95°. Today though, it's only supposed to be 87°. The rest of the week will be in the mid to high 90s. June is usually the hottest with temps hitting 110°+. We lived down in this area for 18 years before moving up to the mountains for the last 25 years. So, the heat is no shock to us. It is a dry heat and, believe it or not, it's not terribly unbearable....Just slightly so. HARO50, Larry Buskirk, lew and 4 others 3 2 2 Quote
Popular Post Cal Posted May 17, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) Thanks for posting up that video John, very interesting! I have started to redo the "little room" that connects the house and garage. It might be called a mud room, we've always just called it the little room. About 6' x 12'. Over the weekend I stripped the ceiling of popcorn and began filling nail holes and such. Edited May 17, 2021 by Cal Gunny, HARO50, Larry Buskirk and 2 others 5 Quote

Popular Post sreilly24590 Posted May 17, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) Made some progress on digging out and forming for the front sidewalk, talked about starting on the dig and form for the new 12'6" observatory dome pad that will be poured at the same time, have the plans and material list in hand to get the needed cherry for my granddaughter's blanket chest, graduation gift (top of her class) to take to ODU this fall, and trying to figure out where all the needed energy is going to come from. The sidewalk dig and removing the old slate was almost too much and not that I'm tight but I hate the idea of paying someone for things I can do, well maybe used to be able to do, before the knees went south and the age caught up (67). The mind still thinks I'm 30 evidently. So this week will be advanced planning and starting on the blanket chest. One issue to resolve now that I can reliably make the through dovetails using the PantoRouter is how to make the 17-1/2" tall box using dovetails when the PR only registers up to 16". I'm thinking mill the wood and mark as I would join to get to width and make those so the two boards when joined would have the DTs spaced and matching. And yes I plan on trying this on something far less $$$ then cherry 1st. The chest has 8 evenly spaced DTs for that 17-1/2" boards. This should take my week's time up in the shop....and maybe some deep thought before and after. And just as a plug, I do love that PantoRouter and wish I had gotten one long ago. Now just to figure out how to expand its limits, or what I think are limits..... Edited May 17, 2021 by sreilly24590 p_toad, Gerald, HARO50 and 3 others 6 Quote

Popular Post forty_caliber Posted May 18, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted May 18, 2021 Finger is healing nicely and not nearly as sore. Superglue works really well to glue skin back together too. I managed to get the oak spacer glued to the underside of the workbench. Glued up some 4/4 x6 x12 hickory stock for the jaws. Had a bad day on the lathe Sunday and ended up scrapping the handle that I made last week. I still have a lot to learn about this tool. Just shows that I need to practice more. It's every bit as much fun as I remember from days long ago. I got to use Stanley #64 to true the (end grain) face of the oak spacer to the bench. Have to say the whole low angle bevel up thing works like a champ. It cut through that end grain like butter. .40 Cal, Gene Howe, HARO50 and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post Gerald Posted May 18, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted May 18, 2021 Had a hands on session Friday on pyrography which went very well.Saturday Woodturning Club had a demo on the same thing, note I do the audio/visual for that. Today had to pick up the office computer after getting new hard drive installed. Boy getting to where reinstalling programs is a B****. Then late this afternoon to the shop to put away tools used Friday. Then back onto the rehab of my 40 year old wheelbarrow. So far have made new handles and sanded out lots of rust. Started priming but ran out of primer. Trip to town tomorrow to get that and hope I have enough paint. It may have to look like a Zebra but we shall see. Gene Howe, HARO50, Cal and 3 others 6 Quote
Larry Buskirk Posted May 19, 2021 Report Posted May 19, 2021 Did a "Dirty Deeds" AC/DC bone yard run before the rain came yesterday, still have a couple things to find. Gunny, Fred W. Hargis Jr, HARO50 and 2 others 4 1 Quote
Popular Post Gene Howe Posted May 19, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted May 19, 2021 Had a couple rolls and a few scraps of insulation left over from doing the shop, so we insulated momma's 10x16 tool shed ceiling, yesterday. Had to staple them up. More ladder work! Got some tucking and stabilizing to do on the shop ceiling. Again, with the ladder! Was planning on starting the stud work today but, no. Guests arrive tomorrow. Looks like the wall construction won't start till next week. Usually, I'm a "go with the flow" type but, I'm getting a bit frustrated, lately. Ah,well. I've got no deadlines to meet. HARO50, p_toad, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 4 others 7 Quote
