May 14, 20215 yr Popular Post New Gazebo is sitting out back, already have a few chairs and planters....comes time to sit my Guinness down...no place....need to correct that oversight... Have some 1 x 6 x 4' Ash lumber...and some 1 x 6 x 75" Ash lumber....three boards each....should be enough. Weight restrictions until Saturday...nothing over 10 pounds....means three boards head to the shop...one at a time... With the worst of these 3 on top....Looking for around 30" of decent lumber....looking along the edge.. Hmmm. we have ways..need to trim the ends a bit.. Yep, that's gotta go....other end? Yep, knot has got to go...splits go, too...set up a saw bench...can't run the circular saw, right now... Get the Disston D-112 down from the hook... Doesn't take all that long...those 2 scraps were headed for the build pile...Square to see how well the saw operator did... Don't think a shooting board will be needed, today. Used this cut plank to lay out #2.. Again, looking for the best section....this time, it was closer to one end... Nice when using a saw, you can look along the saw plate.. And see "Reflections of.."( saw is almost 100 years old, BTW) Got #3 cut to about 30"...and laid the 3 out on the bench.. This is going to take a bit of work.....tablesaw to remove the worst of the curves....not all, just the worst..try again.. I can start pushing Jointer Planes this Saturday morning...goal is, to get the top glued up and sitting off to the side....while I build 4 legs. There MIGHT be a drawer involved...need a place to store coasters, right? Have not decided on a bread board end thing.....maybe, maybe not... Stay tuned...( for those keeping track..1.5 hours of shop time, today)

May 16, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Had a choice between 2 jointer planes.. Decided to use the lighter Millers Falls No.15....rather that the Stanley No. 7c...set up to joint the edges.. Keeping an eye on the grain directions...got to the point I could dry fit 2 boards.. And finally all 3 boards.... And make a lay out line.....and try to glue this thing up... Glue, double cauls, and clamps...slight change in how one board was set... Let this sit a day, or so....came back today, and removed a few clamps... And set this aside....as I need the tablesaw to make a few rip cuts... Once I cut this 1 x 6 x 7' plank into 3 blanks...and set up the rip fence... I need 8 pc, at 1 x 3 x 25"......wound up with 9....one extra. Then more glue and clamps.. Goal here is to glue up a square leg, for now. Try to match up the grain...glue and clamps.. Blanks for 4 legs sitting here....need to install a new blade in the bandsaw.....after I clean up the glue joints, and get a square leg....I can then taper 2 faces....try to show off the best grain.. Stay tuned
May 19, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Time to get caught up? Rip fence, leg blanks were trimmed until square.... Steel ruler to lay out a taper, bandsaw to rough cut......then a couple of these to smooth things out... Soon had 4 legs, tapered on 2 faces.. Aprons....hauled 2 planks to the shop...made a few cross cuts.. 2 long boards for the long side aprons, and 2 short ones...rip fence to straighten one edge, reset and rip for final width...then the drawer front was cut.. When drawer is closed up, it is supposed to look like this.. Made a set up block.. To set up to mill tenons.. Wound up having to clean them up a bit... Faces of the aprons needed planed smooth, too.. Rigged up a way to hold the parts still....while a bead was milled....outside corner on the legs got 2 beads... So this sort of "rope" bead appears...."T" stands for Taper, and shows where the mortise for the tenons will go... Bottom edge of the aprons also gets a single bead. Even the bottom under the drawer.. Long aprons were a bit easier to mill.. Still have a couple "leftovers" I could build the sides of the drawer with these....or....go get a 1 x 6 stick of Pine.... Laundry Detail after Lunch...stay tuned
May 23, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Ok, time to get caught up, again....Mortises were chopped.. Both by just chisels alone, and with the help of a 3/8" Forstner bit... Dry fits were done.. Mitersaw set to cut corner glue blocks... Which get counter-bored for screws.. Mortises for the drawer opening were done this morning.. And then this end of the base was glued together....followed by.. The other end....got in a big hurry, decided to glue the sides in place.. Then the drawer runners were notched and glued in place... All well and good, right? Not exactly....one of the long sides was upside down...had to knock that side apart, turn the apron over, and reglue....And repair on leg that broke, too.....so..right now, I am waiting on glue to dry......before I do anything else..And, sleep off a Migraine, too.. Next up? Install the 4 corner blocks, build a drawer, and add a bread board edge to the table top....without Father Murphy's assistance of course...
May 25, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Clamps came off....so far, so good...went to size all the parts for the drawer..... Hmmm....will do, for now...needs dovetails milled, a groove for a bottom panel to sit in, and a dado for the drawer back to call home. Corner blocks were installed...glued and screwed in place. Need to add drawer guides..wooden ones, of course. Now, about the top of the table.....Father Murphy decreed that the top needed to be wider....so....I added a 3-1/2" wide strip and glued that in place.. Once the clamps come off today....I can trim the ends for square....beltsand the top flat, and mill a tongue on each end for the bread board ends...which I still have to mill...once the top is back in the clamps.....I can see about a little Drawer Building 101? Have stopped one of my daily pills....to see IF it is the source of these daily Migraines....we see. Stay tuned
May 26, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Top got worked on, today....still fighting Father Murphy.....set the panel on the tablesaw....no way am I using it to square the ends....we have ways... First was a matter of trying to flatten each face....makes things easier to lay out, than this. . Kind of rough, eh....so.. Between the Beltsander and that jack plane..this face was soon smoothed out...then This was after the ends got trimmed square....lay out? Figured out how much to trim off....then figure out how far the saw needs.. Between the edge of the blade, and the edge of the shoe...mark that line square across..and clamp the guide fence in place.. Saw is then pushed through the cut, pushing in against the fence....then repeat for the other end... And both ends are now squared up, both faces are now smooth and flat....well, except for a spot or two.. Had a high spot out there..Stanley #3, Type 11 took care of that...next...Bread board ends...need a tongue and groove connection...so...guide fence and a router... First of 4 such passes..goal was for... something like this to appear on each end....then set the panel out of the way.. As I needed to find out how wide the ends needed to be....I also had to joint one edge.. To have a straight edge to run against the rip fence on the tablesaw...soon had these two... Needed cross cut for length...reset the fence, and the height of the blade...and make enough passes to form a groove that would fit the tongue....glue and clamps.. And let this sit a day....2 tasks done for today...#3 WAS to be the drawer....WAS...Father Murphy came back..trying to confuse where each drawer part went...what was inside, what was outside....what was "Top" edge, and what wasn't......then confused the settings for a dovetail bit..to where all it would do was burn wood. Reset that....and then decided enough was enough.....cords somehow getting under feet...Tools trying to hop down onto the floor....just swept the place, and went upstairs...for the last COLD Guinness Extra Stout in the house... Try again, tomorrow, eh? Stay tuned..
May 26, 20215 yr Popular Post Great progress going on there. I would have thought you would have replaced all the furniture in the house by now.

May 27, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Testing out the theory that a Cold Gin & Tonic is great for preventing heat cramps.....seems to be working, so far.....Father Murphy has still not left the building...work around him....and a photo-bombing kitten.... Second try to get the first corner to come out right....not perfect, will just have to do.. Joint was inspected....seemed to pass....then do a second corner... Ok...jig up to plough some grooves.... Hopefully it will sit tight long enough.. 1/4" x 3/8" deep groove...then re-adjust to do the sides.. Nothing to it, right? Need a dado...rather than change the Stanley 45 Type 20 around....I simply got out the Stanley 45 Type 4 out, and set it up as a 3/4" wide dado plane.... I had set the case for this over on the clothes dryer, since it wasn't in use....got out the parts...and... As soon as I turned me back...Murphy caused the case to fall off the dryer, and onto the concrete floor.... Repair with leather strap hinges, later.. Test fit the dado... Not too bad...clean up as needed, with the Stanley No. 71-1/2.... Cut a plywood panel for the drawer bottom...and do the test fits.... Needed to drill some countersunk pilot holes....used a couple "Vintage" drills...( Brace is a No. 1950 Buck Rogers model, the electric one seems to fit right in with that time frame...) I also clip the bottom corners, to make inserting a drawer a bit easier... Glue and screws to assemble the back end...hammer to drive the front corners together....then test fit to the table.. And..get photo bombed again. Finally took the little furr-ball upstairs and let the Boss clean it up....Need to install a handle on the drawer.. I'll use that other thing later.....to smooth the table's top. Then maybe I can attach the top to the base? May round the sharp corners off, too.....might be a bit rough on a shin or knee cap, otherwise? Stay tuned
May 28, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Old Murphy was finally sent out of the building, today...but he put up one whale of a fight.... Anyway...Millers Falls No. 15 to thin the drawer guides down....made a mess on the floor.. Drawer has been cleaned up, and a handle installed....might come in handy when I need in the drawer...drawer guides were then glued in place... They are up that high because that is all the lower the clamps will reach. Also brought the drill over.. To drill a slot in each corner block. Drill straight down, then rock front to back a few times, and a slot will appear....slot allows the top to expand and contract, while keeping it secured to the base.... Top? Drew a curve on each corner...then beltsanded until the line is gone.. Sharp, square corners tend to bruise kneecaps, ya know... Gave the Stanley No. 80 a workout....couple high and rough spots... Seemed to work well enough. Handle for the drawer? Ok, once the glue had dried enough that I could remove those clamps...I could set the base up onto the top.... And get it more or less centered. Had a quick run to Wall E World....needed a box of 1-1/4" long screws.....1-5/8" ones would have gone through the top, can't have that, right... One screw per corner....trying to hit the center of the slot. There is enough space to pull the top down tight.. And that was it, for today....other that patching yet another hole in a finger...again. At least I was wearing a RED T-shirt, today. Shop Kitten has yet to miss a meal...he be getting to be a FAT cat. Mouthy Fat Cat..... Trying to decide what edge treatment I can use on the top of the table. I did pick up a small can of Gun Stock Stain....brush on, wipe off....have about 2 days of sanding and scraping to do, before any finish goes on.....need to add a stop block so the drawer won't go in to far.... Stay tuned..almost done..
May 29, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Drawer fits! Got out the usual suspects, and smoothed the rest of the table.. Each used where they could best do the job. The Stanley No. 80 worked nicely smoothing the legs. Sander went where the other 2 counldn't quite reach.. Then, opened a new can of Minwax "Gunstock" stain...brushed a bunch on....then set it aside...and then wiped it all down.. Only to find out, I had forgot to round over the top's edge......may just leave it like this.. hmmm, may just leave it like that, and see how it turns out. Letting the stain dry a day....need to go and pick up a can of Varnish, and a brush or two... Stay tuned
