Popular Post Ron Altier Posted April 6, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted April 6, 2021 My daughter's birthday is coming up and she requested a pencil box for her desk. It must be large enough to accomodate pencils, pens and markers.( Plus who knows what else.) She wanted it colorful, so I made it of cedar and maple that I already had. I put felt on the bottom of the inside and outside base. Cutting those angles is always a challenge, followed by glue up and turning it round. I don't use aromatic Cedar much anymore, but when I do I use a lot of caution, a good mask and plenty of vacuum. Gerald, Steve Krumanaker, Artie and 8 others 11 Quote

Popular Post AndrewB Posted April 6, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted April 6, 2021 that turned out pretty nice. I've been shopping around for white and red oak lumber myself. the color contrast is good on that. FlGatorwood, Artie, Thad and 2 others 5 Quote

Popular Post HandyDan Posted April 7, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted April 7, 2021 I like it Ron. Excellent work keeping the soft Cedar from dishing between the harder Maple pieces. Not an easy task. Cal, Thad, HARO50 and 4 others 7 Quote

Artie Posted April 7, 2021 Report Posted April 7, 2021 A pencil holder, that could do double duty as a piece of art. I think it’s stunning. I love functional beauty. Gunny, FlGatorwood, Thad and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post FlGatorwood Posted April 8, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted April 8, 2021 Ron, thank you for showing the geometry. I don't know why I didn't figure it out myself. But, I could only count 15 pieces so it seemed unusual. I learn so much from you. Thanks for sharing. Now, if I can remember this until I get to the other end of the garage....... Popular Post Gerald Posted April 8, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted April 8, 2021 That should hold lots of pencils and stuff. I would not be brave enough to use cedar. Gunny, Artie, FlGatorwood and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post Ron Altier Posted April 9, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted April 9, 2021 (edited) I had pieces left over from the first box. Not all were long enough to make another box. Then I thought "what if". What if I glued the smaller left over pieces together end to end. That would make enough to make another box. The joints wouldn't show if I turned a groove and burnt in a line on top of the joints. It took planning, but it worked.
