April 6, 20215 yr Popular Post My daughter's birthday is coming up and she requested a pencil box for her desk. It must be large enough to accomodate pencils, pens and markers.( Plus who knows what else.) She wanted it colorful, so I made it of cedar and maple that I already had. I put felt on the bottom of the inside and outside base. Cutting those angles is always a challenge, followed by glue up and turning it round. I don't use aromatic Cedar much anymore, but when I do I use a lot of caution, a good mask and plenty of vacuum.
April 6, 20215 yr Popular Post That combination of woods looks really good together, nice! Nice glue joints too!
April 6, 20215 yr Popular Post that turned out pretty nice. I've been shopping around for white and red oak lumber myself. the color contrast is good on that.
April 7, 20215 yr Popular Post I like it Ron. Excellent work keeping the soft Cedar from dishing between the harder Maple pieces. Not an easy task.

April 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Really nice job on gluing and turning. What angles and how many pieces of alternating wood?

April 7, 20215 yr A pencil holder, that could do double duty as a piece of art. I think it’s stunning. I love functional beauty.
April 8, 20215 yr Popular Post Ron, thank you for showing the geometry. I don't know why I didn't figure it out myself. But, I could only count 15 pieces so it seemed unusual. I learn so much from you. Thanks for sharing. Now, if I can remember this until I get to the other end of the garage.......
April 8, 20215 yr Popular Post That should hold lots of pencils and stuff. I would not be brave enough to use cedar.
April 9, 20215 yr Author Popular Post I had pieces left over from the first box. Not all were long enough to make another box. Then I thought "what if". What if I glued the smaller left over pieces together end to end. That would make enough to make another box. The joints wouldn't show if I turned a groove and burnt in a line on top of the joints. It took planning, but it worked. Edited April 9, 20215 yr by Ron Altier add
April 10, 20215 yr Popular Post Quite beautiful Ron. Just curious, have you ever thrown out a single piece of scrap?
