In an effort to darken up my stripes I have got some tannic acid powder in and made me a little solution up. Put 2 coats on last week,..and applied my home brew aqua fortis today. Immediately turned a charcoal grey and after blushing with heat gun turned a very dark borwn to almost black. Per the guys in the know that is what it is supposed to do....may go over it again tomorrow as I kinda got interrupted today. I'll sand back the dark leaving the darker stripes hopefully.

After knocking back the plaque with some sandpaper to expose some stripes....I got a round to putting a coat of finish on today and getting some sun time in. Definitely darker and an older look with the tannic acid treatment. I may not always use it but at the moment I'm liking it and would call it a preference.

Totally agree! You've found a process yielding a really sweet finish on a nicely grained piece of wood.

Just got caught up on this thread. Very interesting Aaron.

Nice work and color on the wall mount. You do some very painstaking detail work. Kudos for your patience and project follow through.

Thank you,..but you haven't seen all the projects I've started and didn't finish yet lol. All this scrimshaw for other people did side track several of my personal projects. I am always going to be doing some scrimshaw but I'm done doing it for others at the moment. I have several things I want to do for me and the family...just honestly tired of my stuff leaving the house. My projects ain't worth nothing but it's good hand me downs for the kid in the future.....and that far outweighs what I get for scratching on other's horns. I simply did it for a while to have some work out there floating around in the world.

Love the way that maple came out! Reminds me of black walnut with tung oil.

Same here. As much as I like keeping everything, yesterday I posted a few small items to Florida acquaintances who just lost their son.

Ditto @aaronc's 110%! And, I'd add that it keeps me out of the bars. I quit chasing women a long time ago. That time and money better spent on tools.
