Salt and Pepper Mill Mandrill

Featured Replies

So I started turning on the first block again I just went with a couple bits of 2 x 4.  @lewposted a nice image of one that you had made I can't quite replicate it exactly but I'm trying something.  I also found out that my lathe tail stock will only roll out to 3 inches if I need to drill anything.  Found that out when I had to pull the piece out of its housing.  How ever I started turning the two pieces of 2x4 yet again it popped off on me mid section.  this was after I had started getting it turned down to fit the base of the pepper mills that come from Woodcraft supply.  How ever the side that I was turning down to precise fit for the blank popped off on me again.  I had let the glue cure for 24 hours but it has been 45 or cooler here lately.  I'm sure that was probably the main issue.  I had some 2 ton epoxy mix left so I mixed that up and solved it hopefully that does the trick and keeps the thing on.  I'll probably have to do some re fit to it after the epoxy cures.

I'm also trying to figure out where on earth I can find one of these....

Heres a couple shots of the base of the pepper mill mandrill that I'm attempting to make.... I hope it doesn't end in total failure.

I didn't realize EWT had those definitely going to have to pick one up next month.  A bit on the spendy side but should be worth it to have.  Especially if I get back to doing goblets again.  Either way I was going to try and turn the other set of 2x4s that I've got glued together to fit into the tail stock haven't figured out how I'm going to do that just yet but I'll figure it out.  I'm just trying to get something built up like the pen turning mandrill.  Well attempting to at least.

I have the one @Gerald shows.  I've had it for years and works well.  I like the cone angles and sizes.  It is available on Ebay through Hartville Hardware, also free shipping.

I'm probably going to wind up going with EWT in the long run....  Still have to pick up the stand for the delta.   On the other hand I'm still trying to track down a 12 inch 9/32 or 7 mm bolt which seems quite rare to find I haven't had much luck with home depot or amazon.  So annoying at this point.

scratch that just need a 1/4 x 12 inch bolt and I should be good to go.

Alrighty I think I'm actually happy with this....  I actually didn't have a pair of 2x4 pieces glued together fall apart on me this time.  As I said I think I'm happy with this the first couple of pics is where I started out and start out with....

This is where I started...

The first one I finished off I cut further back so I could fit it onto the 2 inch jaws on my chuck worked quite well.  This is the one I had to use the 2 ton epoxy on...

The second one I got turned down quite a bit so it would just be like an end cap sort of thing I also turned one of them down so I could tell the outside diameter of the pepper mill blank from square to round to see how much play room I would have if I wanted to do anything ornate on them....

The finished parts before adding in the all thread screws.

And the final product not yet fully assembled and bonded together.

So I guess you could say I'm over all quite happy with this so far.

just waiting on a few bolts and all thread to get here then I can finish it off.  Also ordered a second pepper mill blank so I could test it out.

Well I think this project is something that I can call FINALLY FINISHED OFF....

First made the waste blocks to fit into the chuck then proceeded to drill out both ends with a 7 millimeter drill bit.

I purchased a 1/4 inch all thread rod.... Which yes will fit perfectly for 7 mm.

Started piecing things together...

The final product.  Just got to figure out what to place on the end so the tail stock doesnt bow the rod.  Either way I'm happy with this set up.   Should work quite well and I'm also considering picking up some longer all thread rods for different sizes of pepper mill bodies.  So this looks like a win for me in the long run.  I did the test fit on this one with the one I messed up on.

Use an all thread rod coupling nut, with a live center.
