January 19, 20215 yr Popular Post I saw where somebody had a tree cut down in their front yard while driving around. I stopped to ask about it and was told to help myself. I grabbed three logs for now but will probably go back for more. The guy told me he thought it was maple. What does it look like to you all. Also I have a picture of a bowl I started to turn from it. I discovered I need a large bowl gouge and roughing gouge very bad for these larger bowls.
January 19, 20215 yr I’m not very good at identifying wood. The shavings certainly look light like maple
January 19, 20215 yr Popular Post Looks like maple to me. A 1/2" bowl gouge should be plenty of tool for that. You mentioned a large "roughing" gouge in your OP. Hoping you don't mean a spindle roughing gouge? That's a no-no on cross grain turning.
January 20, 20215 yr Author Steve I think so. It looks like a spindle gouge but a lot bigger. Should I just need a bowl gouge to remove all the garbage from the outside?

This video link shows what can happen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOhHeyoZLaY&t=6s Edited January 20, 20215 yr by Steve Krumanaker

January 20, 20215 yr You don't need it but a 5/8 is nice to have. But then again as Steve said the 1/2 will work , just get more vibration. Not familiar with mature maple as it don't grow well here. Did you find any leaves on the ground?
January 20, 20215 yr That bark reminds me of pecan, but that is too far north for them. Ash and hickory have a bark more like oak, but if you had the leaves, it would be a big help.
January 20, 20215 yr Looks like a Red or Sugar Maple. If the bark plates peel off easily it is a Red Maple.
