having made several frames for my wife's needle work, i've learned to allow at least a 5/8" deep rabbit for all the stuff (glass, any spacers, the work, the mat board the work is mounted on, and any mat board that surrounds the work (we rarely do that), and then use framers points to hold things in from the back.  sometimes i've had to make the frame deeper than the 3/4" thick the basic stock i have to work with.  so i double things up and make it 1-1/2" thick, and then i can get a nice profile on the front of the frame.

I have one of these. The thin pins don't need a lot of frame "meat" to hold securely.

So is that point driver a spring loaded thing, like a stapler?

Yes, you squeeze the handle and the point shoots out, parallel to the base.   Sort of like a stapler but the fastener goes out straight instead of down.

Takes about 10-20 seconds to secure everything.

Fred, nice molding on the frames and joinery.  You do awesome work.  All the colors go well together.

This is the one I got few years back.  Got it off ebay but here is Amazon link for it.

I have a "point driver" that makes inserting fast and easy.  https://www.unitedmfrs.com/Framemaster_Point_Driver_p/f07500.htm  You can buy a tool that pushes the points in, but it doesn't work for all frame shapes and is not significantly cheaper.

It takes both "framer's points" (longer) and "glazier's points" (shorter).   The latter you use for securing glass in a rabbet.

I also have my own mat cutter.

I have done probably in excess of 200 frames, so I think they have paid for themselves.  I've also repaired a few mirrors and frames on moving repairs, so used them for business.

This looks like one of those tools you don’t use for long periods.....but when you need it nothing else will do the job as well.

Fred, that profile you used would show any flaws, but there aren’t any! looks great!
