Trying out the new lathe

Got a chance to mount a small block of mahogany on the new lathe and also glue up a larger platter. So far so good on the lathe. As usual compared to the Shopsmith it is very high. It’s solid  as a rock and seems to function well. Having the ability to go down to 25 rpm is interesting when applying finish. There is absolutely no vibration. One drawback is that all my faceplates won’t work and Grizzly seems to be out of their 6” faceplates. Also my G3 chuck needs an adapter which is two weeks away. I did get a faceplate from Maxwood but it takes a 1/4” spacer to work on this lathe and it is also two weeks out. So for now no chuck and one faceplate.

Very Nice Paul.

Almost hate to see it covered in shavings!  Nice turning. Thanks for the update!!!

WOW!!  Very nice.

Very Nice!!

Glad to see dust and shavings on that new machine.  It is working as desired.  And, mahogany is great to turn.  That is a beautiful footed bowl.  Great job.

Love it!  Glad to see you got it fired up and running.

Looks like a jump into it. If you are interested Woodcraft has the Record SC4 chuck on sale for 119.99 and that is a deal.

So I couldn’t resist and I glued up a large walnut panel to turn.

No that’s not a waste block. It’s the foot of the bowl. I glued it on with Titebond 3. I only have the one faceplate that fits and one other that works but needs a spacer. The plan is to turn the bottom of the bowl for which I am using the faceplate that needs the spacer. I just drilled a whole in the top of the bowl to compensate for the protruding spindle. The set screw will not work without the spacer so I just need to be aware not to go into reverse. I am going to shape the bottom of the bowl and cut in a 1/4 inch depression to fit the good faceplate which will help center it, turn it around and shape the top. It will also give me a 3 1/4” X 1/4” hole in the bottom which I plan on using the Shaper Origin to create a decorative disc to glue in and embellish the bottom ( and also cover the screw holes) per Patriot Woodworking protocols 😎

Not to beat on you but with the size lathe you have the G3 is only intended for mid size lathes and you will need a larger chuck for those large projects over 8 inches.

I checked out the ad for the chuck. It requires the purchase of an adapter to fit my 1 1/4” spindle. Other sites offer it for 199 including the adapter. I will have to research it a little more. I am learning that the spindle on this lathe often requires a spacer to align the set screw. I have one of the spacers on the way.

Spent most of the day on the media room but did get a few moments on the lathe. The bottom is done and I carved out the recess for the other faceplate. Tomorrow I will flip it around and start on the top.

Congrats Paul. That is a great looking lathe. Looks very stout.

Thanks Rusty. It’s very smooth and very heavy. So far I am very pleased. This morning I did get the other faceplate mounted, turned it around and started shaping the top. Black walnut is wonderful to turn. It comes off in these fluffy ribbons.
