Turning Spoons

I posted I was doing spoons a week or two ago and @John Morrisasked for my method. Well here it is. I am using dimensional rough sawn cherry for my blanks and saw them out on bandsaw.IMG_4456.jpg.5922d51d9fba3be578c8e08b0c1af7eb.jpg

When I mount on lathe the head of the spoon is at the headstock in a drive spur . The side to be carved is mounted slightly lower than the edge of the spur. This allows the back to be turned almost round. At first I tried for more round but the bowl was a little narrow so I now leave the back flat and sand it and then sand a roundover transition to the sides.

Then the handle , knob and back of bowl are turned.

Now I carve the bowl using a Arbortech ball carver. Since the end of the bowl is end gran it breaks out easily so after learning that lesson I left that end thicker and then sanded the outside end to get final thickness.

Then using a flap sander in drill press I sand inside the bowl .

Very nice tutorial.  What other species of wood do they recommend for spoons?

Had to go watch a video an the gouge.  First I've heard of it.

Thanks for that Gerald. I am going to have to try that this one. I don't have a carving ball so I may try something else to carve out the spoon part. Maybe a cove bit in the drill press ?

Paul

Thanks, Gerald.  I have never seen a bit like that.  I have googled and can't find one like it.  But, thanks for the tutorial.

Interesting I may have to give that a go at some point......

You can use any wood that you would use for a cutting board. No oaks or open grain woods.

Dan so far I have made spoons with maple and mesquite. I think the guys that actually carve uses a light wood like bass. I grind my wood away so it don't matter what wood I use.

I am starting a combo of a knife, fork and spoon and I have what I will call a platter with a fancy edge to display on the wall.

I'm still trying to come up with a good size for them! But this time of the year I get side tracked for these.IMG_20201025_090219119.jpg.8e6664ac262bb3b9f1350e8fd06a2a8d.jpg
