September 29, 20205 yr Popular Post Finished these off today I'm turning thinner and thinner in wall thickness and bottom thickness and its getting easier to do with out blowing through the bottoms of the bowls. They came out nicely so I'm quite happy with them.
September 29, 20205 yr I'll say the walls are getting thinner! To go further, I think you'll have to start looking at a harder species. Now's a good time of the year to make your rounds to look for tree trimmers. You may be able to pick up some free green wood. You'll be amazed how it turns!
September 30, 20205 yr Author Yea I'm going to be adding in probably two more purple heart bowls after this week at some point. and possibly a couple more we shall see. I've been sourcing lumber at home depot the last couple of weeks. Either way I'm liking turning the walls a lot thinner on the bowls it actually makes things look a lot nicer in the end of things. I'm also really starting to appreciate the fact that the head stock on my HF lathe swings 90 degrees. Its quite a nice feature actually. I've also been contemplating on hooking a speed dial on it as a test to see if I can get the lathe to spin lower than 600 RPM not sure if that would be worth looking into if I can find my speed controller.
October 2, 20205 yr @lew, following the sound of chain saws and tree trimmers, that is how I started. I bought very little wood from a big box store. I have a couple of 2" X 4" and some plywood, but I have cedar, pecan and cherry. I need more shop time to use it. LOL It takes work but you love the results as you never know what you're going to get.
