@Artie  Holy Moses, Elijah and all the prophets man, you are making us look bad.

You gotta throw some sawdust on the floor and some tools.

I didn't realize they were that pretty either till I saw Artie's here. Just the miter handle is so pretty and shiny, they take on a drab look after awhile. I am very impressed with Artie's Smith.

I wish I could even afford one LOL.  Wouldn't mind owning one myself.

Andrew, they can be had used pretty danged in expensive. Of course Artie has a good start on owning the shebang, brand new and with warranty, if you can swing new, why not? But some of us the used route is the way to go.

On a great day on Craigslist older models can be seen for 500 bucks, the Model 510 or Mark V seems to be the most popular used machine on the net. If you really want one, gather up several hundred to 5 or 6 hundred bucks, stick it in reserve, cookie jar, bank, cushion, and forget about it, and wait, and check into your area Craigslist weekly or daily, and you'll land one. You can hit us up for advice if it's a good deal or not.

Here is a Shopsmith Mark V in my area for 300.00.

Looks like a great starter machine. And clean. Just an example.

Used with accessories and manual

With any and all tools I always try to buy new.  When I buy used I never know what kind of mess I'm getting into.  Or even buying a lemon which is what I try to avoid completely.

Okay here’s the story, When my Mom passed, and we settled the estate, I was responsible, and paid down the mortgage so we could refinance (saved us over 100K), paid off all our debt (with the exception of the new mortgage), remodeled the main bathroom, and replaced the HVAC system. I know Mom and Dad would have wanted me to have done something for myself from them and I have always wanted to learn how to make stuff with wood. Guy at work has a 52 year old Shopsmith, told me about it, and I checked out the website. Since we live in a townhouse, and the basement has to be used for many purposes, and there is definitely not enough room for stand alone machines, I decided a Shopsmith it was! Now I’ll buy lots of stuff used, but when I’m getting into something I know nothing about, I like to get the equipment new, so that the only weak link is me LOL. Bought my first boat new, so I wouldn’t have to learn boating, AND boat repairing, at the same time.  So I don’t get enough time in the shop (alright everybody else also raise their hand!), but I have really enjoyed the time I get down there. I am learning (slowly, but the people here have really helped), and that’s why the SS looks so shiny.

Miter handle ???  :WonderScratch: I thought it was some sort of bathroom fixture :throbbinghead:

@Artie, I split your Shopsmith off from the forum introduction topic, it deserved a topic all it's own, how ya don't mind. :)

I’m gonna need some help here, I can’t carry a thread by myself! :)

Loan me a few grand so I can buy one.  I will find room in the shop for it.  And use it.  Even have sawdust all over it.  :throbbinghead:

Artie, if you send me your mailing address, I can send you a bag of pear shavings. LOL   Then it would have a good used look.  That is a pretty machine.  Just keep it waxed.  Does it need to have the sheaves oiled or does it even have sheaves?  My logic says it doesn't have any sheaves, but my knowledge has no idea.  Also, I like those tables.  But, I don't use the table saw that much.  About to start making a few boards for park benches.

Steve, no sheaves (hey that almost rhymes). Pear shavings would probably smell better than what I’m used to.

Showed this to a friend of mine as a solution for his workshop.  He called me to borrow my truck to make a run to the lumberyard to buy supplies to make something like it.

Congrats, you inspired someone!!!!

To cross reference two threads, after seeing that workshop you posted, I realize how poor looking and lack of craftsmanship my set up is. Thoroughly functional though.

Just starting out hardly a reasonable expectation for yourself.  And again the guy has been working on all that for 20 plus years.  If yours looks the same in 2040 maybe we can have this discussion.  :ChinScratch:

Tomorrow I will take a picture of a cabinet I made 14 years ago, in a hurry, under alot of stress (divorce) and with the attitude its good enough who cares.  Next project is to make this 8 ft cabinet into two smaller ones, and go for a bit better quality and use of materials.
