June 8, 20206 yr Popular Post Finally finished building the buffet that has been a labour of love for a long time. Lots learned, mistakes made, but it looks great now in its place. Beech and Tasmanian Oak. Lots of "in progress" pictures if anyone is interested, just let me know. Last shot showing the table I built that inspired the matching buffet.

The door: clamped the top offending corner of it against the carcass for a few days since I wasn't able to do any work on the piece. That actually seemed to coax it back into alignment. And added another coat of poly and it's stayed straight ever since. Very thankful. I was not looking forward to the idea of doing a third set to try and get that continuous look.

Not sure if I'm ready to tackle chairs yet, although I suspect it won't be long before my wife challenges me to try. I will one day, but I want to get some more practice under my belt first to continue to get my confidence up. A number of first times on this project, such as routing grooves for the door/drawer pulls, actually making a cabinet, carcass work, drawers - construction and runners, stretcher legs, joining boards for width (needed for the base)... oh and first project using the table saw. I'd like to try and consolidate some things and just practice in general before tackling something that to my mind is a different level of challenge.

Awhile back, several people had commented on it was a long name to type and such. Just went with what everyone calls me. Only my wife and parents use my given name. To long in the military huh? June 9, 20206 yr @1fizgig, awesome job on the engineering, lamination, matching, doors, drawers, finger grooves and finishing. You have become a real artist. Chairs, ah, just a piece of cake for someone like you. Looking forward to seeing them.
June 9, 20206 yr I think that came out super And I would like to see a few of your pip's, may have questions when we see how it went together. Did you follow a set of plans, a picture, or just a plan that you made on the fly? Great work, beautiful!
June 9, 20206 yr Thanks for the door update. Glad it worked out for you. The extra coats of finish might have helped. Please keep us in the loop over time. Sure hope it doesn't decide to return to it's previous state.
June 10, 20206 yr It is beautiful! I see in one of your pictures you had the snoopervisor making final inspection.
June 10, 20206 yr Looks beautiful - I especially like the grain match on the doors. Have to mention - every time I see this thread title, I'm thinking of "completing" the AYCE buffet for $9.95!

Yes, the snoopervisor regularly inspected the work right from day one. He likes spending time with me in the garage, until I start the power tools!

I have about 60-odd in progress photos, so I might zip them up and attach them that way. I'll post when I'm done. As to the plans, no, literally my wife and I did the design sketched on paper, I then did it up in Sketchup (mostly for my benefit and practice), and then went for it, adjusting components to fit on the fly.
