Friendship Bowls

Thought I had posted this but looks like that was on FB. These bowls are called friendship bowls. My wife likes to give my stuff away sometime so I asked her to ask me fiest and started making these after Dixie Biggs did a demo at our club showing these. Made these from scrapes from turning offering plates. We I wanted to put a collar on and did not think about the bowl warping as it dried. Saved by an idea I remounted the bowls as most were made with a mortise or in expansion  mode. By bringing up the tailstock with a cone the bowl stayed in place well for rounding out an area at the top for the collar. Started out with stain and lacquer.

 

Then for another idea for embellishment . Made a spiral burner and branded the bowl. After this I added Ruby Rub n Glow but have to make a pic of that for another post. Placing a collar on with a small hole allows hollowing and no need to smooth inside.

Collars are done after bowls. The top one is pecan, then walnut and azobe, at bottom pecan All bowls are pecan

I like those.  How did you burn the circles in?  Looks like it took some time.

Used 18ga nichrome wire and just started to wind in a flat circle. The wire tends to come out of alignment from the pressure and heat so will have to flatten the brand out after 10 -15 burns. The whole thing wen rather quickly actually.

Really nice Gerald.  I especially like the blue one in the first pic.  I am not sure about the branded one... but as an experiment it turned out great!

The collar on the blue bowl is a wonderful contrast to the blue, super!

Ok here are the rest of the bowls. Still need a couple coats of lacquer.

 

 

All are pecan for bowl. This one has a cherry collar.

 

 

A variation on the burn patterns, dyed with Chestnut Stains, walnut collar.

 

 

Azobe collar on this one.

I love the different colors and the burning technique ! They really are beautiful. It’s always nice to have a piece of art that was made in the shop to give visitors.
