April 10, 20206 yr Anyone have any pictures or plans of jewelry boxes they've made? I am looking for something I can make out of some salvaged black walnut. Probably 3 drawers and no hinged lid. Not finding many examples of such. Since the wood is re-purposed, dimensions are somewhat limited to 8x16x8.
April 10, 20206 yr Author Popular Post I'm leaning toward something like this that I made for another set of granddaughters. These I made for my paternal twin granddaughters in opposite woods. Their older sister's drawer fronts are quartersawn sycamore. Sadly, I have a whole bunch of curly hard maple that was cut-offs from muzzle-loading stocks. All but one have a lot of worm tunnels. Drat. Off to the fire pit. Edited April 10, 20206 yr by kmealy
April 11, 20206 yr Popular Post Nice chests, Keith. You probably want a nice clean look but, I'd be tempted to fill those worm tunnels with black epoxy. Maybe another project? Edited April 11, 20206 yr by Gene Howe
April 13, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Project is moving along. Decided to go about 8" high and 13" wide (~ golden ratio). Three drawers. Sides of box are about 3/8" thick, based on what I could salvage from the doors by missing the huge mortises. The corners are mitered (beveled) and just got them together today with "Quick and Thick" Titebond. I'm planning on putting in keys to strengthen the miter end-grain joints. I decided to go with wood runners dadoed into the sides and side of drawers. A new adventure for me and I'm trying to use my router table more than I have before. Since I don't have good access to a hardware store now, and don't want to order online, I am planning on doing wooden pulls. I will probably pull some wood from the inventory, most likely maple, for the drawer fronts. I also plan to do the drawer corners with the 1/4 - 1/4 - 1/4 method (AKA dado and rabbet). It's going slowly, but hey, what else do I have to do? Tomorrow is SWMBO's birthday and already have the "cake" made. Not traditional, but what she asked for.

Love you choice of woods on both. Definitely different than anything I've attempted, and I'm sure the joinery is more complex. Edited April 13, 20206 yr by Al B

April 16, 20206 yr Author Well, I learned something. First time doing those side glides on drawers (that are grooved out to slide on them). I used to think that full-extension ball-bearing glides were a pain to get aligned. At least they are adjustable. These puppies are trying my patience trying to get the drawer to move smoothly. I don't think I'll be ever doing this style again.

On the drawer slides ,I do 1/4"X1/4" and put the groove in the drawer sides, then after the face is on the box make some 1/4X1/4 strips, put them in the slots with a piece of paper behind them in the slot for clearance, put a little glue on the face and slide them carefully into the case. when the glue is dry pull them out and remove the paper strips, they should slide easily. April 18, 20206 yr Author Popular Post I must be getting bored. I cleaned the shop today. Well, not completely, but I vacuumed the floor and put a bunch of stuff away. Cleaned a saw blade and trowel. Drained the compressor. Last weekend, my 30 gal garbage can dust separator was full to the brim. This was the one under my shop-built Thein separator. Dumped it in the garbage can. I think the garbage man was not ready for it, some of the dust seemed to get in his eyes when he dumped it. Edited April 18, 20206 yr by kmealy
