New blades for the windmill

  • Popular Post

I could not find a forum for metal working and I would say that 90% of all my tools is 25 years old or older. So I hope I posted this in the right spot.

I built this Windmill over 50 years ago and I'm now putting on it's third set of blades. First set was made of wood. Second set was plastic. This what I'm hoping is the last set will be made from aluminum. Each blade is five feet long. I generate low voltage to run outside night lights with this mill. Everything made with stuff from the junkyard. The head is made from a VW beetle. One picture is me dragging the tower with my Dads tractor to where it gets stood up.

I was thinking Home Improvement with the reasoning that it is a alternative energy source for his lights.  Just my 2 cents worth anyway.  :D

Low speed generator with magnets. It only needs two wires to work.

Okay I am good so far, two wires and a generator.  How would I hook that up to the windmill to make it work?

I used a vw volkswagen rear for the mill to sit on so the wind can turn the carriage to keep the blades pointed into the wind. This also lets me use two bevel gears so I have a shaft pointing down out of the carriage. This turning shaft lets me mount my generator with a belt. You can see the large pulley in this picture. The generator is not mounted in this picture.

This is the valley that I live in, You can just see the yellow blades at the end of the arrow. My tower is only 65 feet tall. I can no way run my house off what I get for power but over the years it sure was fun and educational.

Well this looks interesting care to tell us how this one works.  How much electricity does it produce?

How do you control the speed when the wind is strong?
