I have a plain, old candle.   Use on the screw threads, and even on the soles of the planes ( be sure to hold on tight,,,)

 

Pilot holes....as long as they don't go into my thumb.   Either in an electric drill, or a 6" sweep brace...

 

Nails?    Hit the point of the nail with the hammer you are going to use on it.   Small nails,,,cut the head off of one, chuck that into a drill....nail makes the perfect hole for other nails that size.  

 

What happens when you try to use them old, antique wood screws....the ones made without a pointy tip....hope you have the right sized drill bit...

Do you have an auger bit small enough for pilot holes?

Might have a few..

Regular bit is a #5 = 5/16"....smallest twist drill is a 5/32".....

 

A #6 auger bit would be the same as a 3/8" drill bit...or, about the same as the counter-bore bit I use.
