Well gang, we’ve made it to a Friday.  In fact, the last Friday of this leap year month of February.  Anybody out there born on a February 29th?

My week has been divided between a couple of meetings and doing a whole lot of reading about ordinances, redevelopment and solid waste management.  Pretty exciting stuff, huh.  I have had some shop time though because I have a show in early May and I need stock.  Thanks to @Fred W. Hargis Jr , I’ve been building a few cheese slicing boards and I also threw together a hickory coffee mill.

 

So, Patriot Woodworkers, what’s on your weekend agenda?

Once Uncle Charles leaves....I might try to get a box built...

There is about 3" of that white crap on the railing...I hate snow.

Still piddling around trying to get my desk finished. I love oil based varnish for a lot of things, but it does have the downside of taking time to cure. I'm waiting for it to cure enough for the final wet sanding, and then the last coat, which is only a wiped on application.

Trying to catch up with little things. And, like Fred said, waiting for varnish to dry.

Small stuff in shop to get sorted. Little bit of shuffling stuff not used much to higher ground. Need some room for hand planes now that I have 4. They need a home, together.

 

Got this gem to refurb.

Well, I was planning to get the back deck framed up this weekend.  I set the posts last week and then it rained, and rained, and rained.  And then our daughter called last night and said she needed a brake job done on her car.  So, she gets home this evening and I will spend some time doing that tomorrow.

But today I can sort through my stack of 2x's and pull out what I need to get started on the deck.

 

My week was a little more rewarding.  I got these 5 turned.  Just look on the ground behind the one on the Shopsmith.  Now, to fill in the chip outs.  I have some Kwickwood, but it is not stainable.  Gotta search for something else.

There are several stainable fillers but not a guarantee the resulting color will be a good match. Another possible is to use gel stain which sits on the surface. Also you could add color to the finish which is easy for lacquer .

I went to a woodworking machine shop and they recommended the Kwikwood.  But reading the label says it is paintable.  It is an epoxy that you mix together by gloved hand.  The customer told me that they planned to paint.  When I showed these newel finials to the customer, then he wanted to stain them.  This fir chipped in very delicate areas.  So, I needed to fill some pretty big voids.  Thank you, Gerald.  I will continue looking.
