Food safe finish

Featured Replies

I’m wanting to use a salad bowl finish, by general finishes.  I’ve used it before, but I always get a mediocre mat finish.  Is there a way to make it have a better sheen?  Or maybe some other type of food safe finish?

I use a mixture of bees wax and mineral oil. About 4:1 ratio oil to wax. Melted and mixed. Heated in the microwave before applying.

Also the higher the grit you sand it to the shinier it will get.

Thanks everyone for, your help.  I had to go to Rocklers for some rubber feet and while I was there I seen some walrus oil.  It contains coconut oil, mineral oil, vitamin E and beeswax.  Not sure what the vitamin E does....I also picked up some walrus oil wax. Both products are food safe.  It worked very nice and gave me the sheen I was hoping for.  Now the rolling pin holder was my wife’s idea....happy wife, happy life...but she said she is going to use it when she serves up some pastry... anyhow, it’s made from hard maple and black walnut.  Not sure if I should post this here or in the woodworking section.  If it’s in the wrong area, I apologize.

Beautiful, @Pauley !!!

Thank you, Lew.

Thank you, Keith.  I learned some.  Not sure if I can remember it, but for the moment, I am pretty sharp on it.  I normally use mineral oil.  And, if you spin it up on the lath with a paper towel, it will bring up the shine.

I have been using beeswax and putting it on like friction polish. It comes out shiny.

the Vitamin E is just in the mineral oil already so the marketing team chose to advertise it. It really does nothing as the wood is already dead

I have been using Howard’s Butcher Block Renewal for all my food safe wood projects. It has the mineral oil and wax already mixed. Works great. Most times when I am giving someone a gift that requires it I will include one of the small bottles along with the gift.

The maple's dead, Jim.   So is the walnut.
