Kevin Beitz Posted December 23, 2019 Report Posted December 23, 2019 I've had these forever. They was with my grandfathers tools. I have no idea what they are or what they are used for. Both made by ANDERSON BROS MFG. CO. Both have a slide on them. Both look like a file with no teeth. No sharp edges anywhere. HARO50, Cal and FlGatorwood 2 1 Quote

Kevin Beitz Posted December 23, 2019 Author Report Posted December 23, 2019 That was fast.. Thanks... I see that I'm missing the blades. Looking on E-bay I don't even see where any blades has ever been sold. I see the whole tool for sale but not the blades. Maybe I can make something different out of them.... Found a picture of a blade on google. Gunny, FlGatorwood and Cal 3 Quote
Popular Post HandyDan Posted December 24, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted December 24, 2019 Nice find @lew. Looks like the scraper and the blades can still be bought here. https://andersonscraper.com/product-category/anderson-original-solid-shank-hand-scrapers/ Gunny, Cal, FlGatorwood and 2 others 4 1 Quote
Gerald Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 'Looks like they think a lot of that tool. Also note now a carbide blade. Gunny, Cal, DuckSoup and 1 other 4 Quote

Ron Dudelston Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 I actually have a set of them and know how to use them. They’re scrapers to scrape cast iron ways for machine tools. It’s a lost art because the machine tool makers grind their ways now. When I finished my apprenticeship in 1977, we used red lead to mark the ways as we scraped them. The feds outlawed red lead and went to a different compound. FlGatorwood, Cal and HARO50 3 Quote
Popular Post Ron Dudelston Posted December 24, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted December 24, 2019 Here’s the proof. If you’ll notice there is carbide silver soldered to the scraper. The other scraper is one that I used to scrape Babbitt or bronze bearings like on a Norton grinder. Somewhere in the toolbox is a nifty scraper that I made to add “fish hooks” to the ways. Kevin Beitz Posted December 24, 2019 Author Report Posted December 24, 2019 So maybe these two are scrapers to ? they was also in my box of tools. Bottom one looks like another file with no teeth... Cal 1 Quote
Ron Dudelston Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 Yep. The top one is a spoon scrapers for Babbitt. I’ve got one but didn’t like it so I made my own. Cal and HARO50 2 Quote
HandyDan Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 Worked for an engine rebuilder for awhile and used the curves scrapers to fit cam bearings after installing new. Quote
Kevin Beitz Posted December 24, 2019 Author Report Posted December 24, 2019 So... Is there parts missing on the bottom file looking thing? Quote

Ron Dudelston Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 If you’ll look, the bottom one has been made from a file. Looks like he put it in a surface grinder and tapered it. Not uncommon at all. Anyone who scrapes a lot has their own special tool and twist on how to do it. Here’s a spotter that I used a lot. The circle on the end is a rubber pad that You hit with the heel of your hand. Quote
Kevin Beitz Posted December 24, 2019 Author Report Posted December 24, 2019 I'm not sure the file looking thing is a scraper. If it's not missing anything and I can't see how it could work. There is no sharp edges on it anywhere. There is a stamped Name/number on one side... Quote
Gerald Posted December 25, 2019 Report Posted December 25, 2019 Well there was a file in that machinist chest I bought that had been ground down and now at least I can see a possible use. Quote
