Mijohnson1984 Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 So I was picking up some moldy sweet gum tree stumps and the lady I’m getting them from says she’s selling for lathe cause she’s never used it and they are moving. The price is insane at 50 dollars. It’s a bench pro 4 speed wood lathe. I’ve been looking it up online and I get nothing. It’s a off/sub brand and just trying to get some info on before I pull the trigger on it. I’m going back tomorrow with my tools to see if it runs and turns nice. Anyone heard of it or has one maybe. HandyDan Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 Never heard of or seen one before. From what I see in the picture I would suggest you pass on it. It is not much of a lathe. May be okay for learning to turn spindles but you would soon find yourself wanting to buy a better lathe. Cal 1 Quote
Gunny Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 How much turning have you done thus far? If it is very little, as HandyDan pointed out it is a start. May need a belt depending on how old the unit is. I would watch for CL deals, much better out there for a bit more money. Cal 1 Quote
Mijohnson1984 Posted April 16, 2019 Author Report Posted April 16, 2019 (edited) I’ve turned a few spindles and turned my first bowl tonight. So not a whole bunch. I figured as much on the quality, I have a record power rpml300c that I’ve got tuned up finally. Took forever to lap the bed flat and I still have a shimmy ever once and awhile. Belt is probably old and flexing to much. That one would be for only spindle turning legs that or to transfer my current motor and tailstock on to. But Im not to sure I could do that even. So I’ll pass on it Thank you for the advice. Edited April 16, 2019 by Mijohnson1984 Cal and Gunny 2 Quote

Mijohnson1984 Posted April 16, 2019 Author Report Posted April 16, 2019 They look great I keep eyeing them at the store. Hoping they do a demo down here in Texas sometime. As for sharpening I don’t mind it. I’m always telling my son you have to learn how to do something by hand first before you learn how to use a power tool. Needless to say he is a excellent hand sander now. Cal, Gunny, lew and 1 other 3 1 Quote
Gerald Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 For turning tools look at Thompson lathe tools. We will talk about hollowing when you get there. Cal and Gunny 2 Quote
Mijohnson1984 Posted April 16, 2019 Author Report Posted April 16, 2019 lol yea for now open form till I get more familiar with the bowl tools. But that will be a couple of months other projects in the pipe line. p_toad and Cal 2 Quote

This should extend your collection until you move up to better ones. They work, even had a box for them. Now I have room in a drawer for some Easy Wood ones.
