Plastic Bottles and Chemicals

Featured Replies

As a pharmacist I see loads of stock plastic bottles which drugs come to the store in thrown out daily. I use one for Watco so do not have to open the can as much. I think they are HDPE. If you could find one to fit that top you have would be prefect.

@HandyDan ..

How about something like these???

I started looking at other bottles for their code.  I found a bottle under the sink that had additive for the dishwasher to make for less spots.  It had the HDPE code on the bottom so I put what was left in the dishwasher, cleaned the container and put acetone in it.  I left it in a tin can for a test to see how well it holds up.  The tin can will contain the leak if necessary.  Sometimes I use a 1/4" or a 1/2" brush to put finish on small items and will just wet the brush with the proper solvent and wipe it on a rag rather than putting some in a small container to wash out the brush.  Sometimes I just want a little on a rag to wipe off a little adhesive residue.  Anyway this is what I use.  If the HDPE container doesn't work out I will go to the glass hot sauce bottle.

I would add to your having labeled the bottle to write a DATE on it.  Everything in my shop gets a date before being put away.  Takes some time to start now with everything you have but once you get that done when you buy it date it and put away.  Only reason I do this is far too often I would look and find a can of this or that and wonder when did I get this, is it too old?  Now, oh I bought this in 2008, it is paint, probably bad.... :)  Of course I also have to wonder why did I keep it this long....

  Update.  The acetone has been in the HDPE bottle for two weeks and so far shows no signs that the plastic is weakening.
