Friday, February 1, 2019. What’s on Your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

The big big thaw is on in east central Indiana!  It’s a balmy 17 degrees   and I suspect the robins will be flying in at any time.  Last night the temps began to rise and we got 5 inches of snow.  The coldest we got this week was -17 but it was bearable because I keep my shop heated.  This week I had 2 major accomplishments other than staying warm.  Last Monday, I braved the snow and picked up a Dewalt 735 planer 5hat I bought and I managed to complete a mantle for a client.  I’ll install it next week and add a bit of trim to match.

So, Patriot Woodworker’s, what’s on your weekend agenda?

Still working on a coping sled. It's multi functional so, I'm attempting to follow plans. So tedious. I gotta measure stuff.:(

Nixed the Indy Woodworking show which started today...schools had 2 hour start delay, Sectional Swim Prelims were rescheduled from last night to tonight plus the 4"+ of snow.

Doing the math, I could have just made it in time for the doors to open, pay to get parked, walk to the Pavilion, buy a ticket, get inside, walk to the far end to use the restroom, stop at concessions for a cup of coffee, walk back to the exit, then across the parking to find my truck, dodge the incoming traffic to leave, drive back home, get to the swim sectional, park, buy an event pass, find and secure my seat, go to the the restroom, back to my seat, Stand for the National Anthem so as not to miss the first event.

I think this plan would have worked too barring any delays or an additional restroom stop but by the time I had the plan mapped out, it was too late to get started so...Sectional swim prelims late this afternoon, Sectional finals & championship events tomorrow late AM through the afternoon. Sunday church services, then second guessing myself with regret if I could have made the Woodworking Show Friday.

Hey John, great to see you posting again...been awhile. Hope all is good?

Excellent looking storage rack. Did you do the carving with CNC or by hand/router/template?

Regardless, nicely done. What are your plans for the final finish?

Appreciate you sharing.

I've been lurking off on and

these are carved with an Axiom CNC (makes this type of stuff a dream). these will be finished with a 1/3 blend of BLO, Varnish, and Mineral spirits

No plans.

Two walnut cutting boards got to where they were going today. They were very happy.

No pistol match tomorrow, too much snow at the range still.

@ John Hechel

Now thats a shop, I can see some chips and sawdust. Good job on the racks.

@ Ron Dudelston

Good looking mantle, you sure do nice work always.

I went to the monthly WW meeting at WoodCraft last nite we had a great turnout over 25 people and I only recognized at the most 6. Lots of new members and new faces. The presentation was on Japanese tools and carpentry. Very interesting meeting.

But I got to thinking that I better make 5-6 more wooden planes for my presentation in May, I only made 20 so far. I have a bunch of 1 3/8" wide blades that I had to buy to get some of the wider 1 5/8" blades I used for the first go round. So this is a chance to use up those. So another go around on the planes, I won't bore you guys with anymore pictures , I promise.

Great work Ron & John.

Herb, we like pics - please bore us with a few!

I have started the living room floor project.  Carpet & padding removed.  Walking across that bare particle board underlayment is like walking on a ship in somewhat rough water, with each step being a different height!:(  Today I may start to remove some of that particle board so that I can assess the OSB subfloor underneath.  Some good news - after watching a few you tubers on leveling floors I decided to look around for a laser level.  Found an older rotary model at a pawn shop for almost free - my kind of deal!  Wish I had had this a couple years ago when I did the upstairs...

Also dealing with a slew of other projects as time, weather, money, inclination and the moon all converge at the same point... like looking at house/kitchen plans for a kitchen remodel after the flooring has been addressed:blink:

And birding!  One such smaller project was to build and put up a couple new bird feeders.  The baltimore oriole is back for the winter and I put one of the feeders closer to the house for him so that maybe I can get a good picture this year.  I also seen a yellow bellied sapsucker in the bushes a week or so ago, so with some luck I may get a pic of that also.  And, I have a new visitor to the suet feeder that I have not yet identified.  She (I think) is not to colorful, but hangs and acts like a woodpecker type of bird.  I've not been able to get a good pic yet - but I am trying...  And, there is the Firebird - have one little (I hope) project that I just ordered a part for yesterday...

Have to go get my brother this morning for our weekly visit.  He broke his wrist and can't drive.

Still working with the inside out turnings.  Here is a new one.

I'm just happy it wasn't something where I have to go take his ladder and hide it.

I prefer you do...never can see enough shop made planes, especially yours plus these are different; 1-3/8" vs 1-5/8" blades;)

Progress report: I may have some of this measuring crap er...stuff, figgered out. At least now I know how to keep that tape from rolling up. Still working on the function of the numbers and those little lines. :BangingHead:
