this was a deck that was BB PT and suffered the usual issue of PT decks..

Splitting, raised grain, weathering, warping, ray separation...

the substructure was WW and was in the advanced stages of rot in the substructure and where it attached to the house for the lack of treatment, flashing and water letting...

it is now heart redwood and fir substructure.. the top edges of the sistered members have a bituminous layer/wrap on them...

 

   

 

 

 

While I was there the HO had little ''beefing up'' done to hold the 8 body hot tub..

I thought the "acronym" page was official but it didn't have any links for it - should it be? 

Knowing there was the acronym page I did a search of BB and WW without success.

White wood is the cheap, crappy wood available at BB's (home centers) and will vary by region... Here in Colorado it's some kind of pine or hybrid  there of (generally leaning towards spruce but not always) which leads to your guess is as good as anybody's as to what it really is....

We should probably update the acronym page, because I honestly though that by BB, you meant Baltic Birch, as in the deck was constructed of Baltic Birch plywood.  I assume PT is pressure treated, and I had never heard of pressure treated Baltic Birch plywood, but then I am not a contractor either.

oh come on   WW is really great for full exposure so long as it was soaked in Ethylene glycol for a few years  then dried and soaked in  boiling pitch  before being used.

The WW here in the Great PNW is Hemlock, which has no pitch or resin to preserve it, they soak it in PT to displace the juice in  it to make it out door wood.

They say it will last 30 years buried in soil, that is a lie.

Thanks for the lesson @Stick486.  I cannot imagine using what sells around here as WW for anything outdoors, much less substructure for a deck!

@John Morris - what I was trying to convey, poorly I reckon, was that the acronym page should be a good resource for us - if you know it exists.  I am not sure I actually found it; what I found by searching the term "acronym" was a thread that Stick had started some time back...

Stick---where is your source of redwood? Here in MN I have not found any such source. I work with recycled redwood as I can find it---some which is 50-60 years old. Brief sanding and it restores to likenew appearance and quality-----really good looking job on the deckwork.

more like the super sandy Sahara....

as this project progressed the HO got more involved and began to ask ''how to'' questions and started asking for teach me sessions...

the sessions went rather well...

I mostly looked over his shoulder and gave him the how to method pointers... but the there was a tremendous amount of how come and what fors.. think the little kid and the the word ''why???''...

it didn't take long before it became apparent that he want to know and really want to learn...

some of it did turn into a '' I'm more anallitic than you are'' thing which was a good thing...

this swing is his product of those sessions w/ a little over watch.......

the pavers.. I got him started... he finished it...

after the 1st tenon it was all him...

he milled the slats too from rounds...
