Grandson's Coffee Table...

Grandson wants a Coffee Table for his home....and I need it done by Christmas...Hmmmm...doable?

First, need a few boards....back to the usual supplier...$10 for a stack of Ash

One board for a top...2 x 4 for legs..and a vise rehab...

Even a few scraps were tossed into the van..

Not too sure about the spalted one....middle one was needed...

10' of 1 x 6 Ash....will make a 3/4 x 16 x 36 top....got these three jointed, and glued up..

Let this sit overnight....

 

Clamps came off...cauls can wait awhile...Hauled that 2 x 4 x 8' board to the shop...needed two blanks cut from it....without including too many knots..

Set up the rip fence..

Roughly all the same size, and square?

Marked a few lines...bandsaw to make a few cuts, junior jack to clean up..

Couple cuts weren't working out...reset the rip fence, run the fat ends through...about a blade's width...

Brought the better of the two 3/4 x 6 x 6' planks to the shop...was trying to get all four aprons out of it...Laid out the legs on the table top...to get the lengths needed...was coming up a tad short....that short scrap then became the short apron...

But..there needs to be a drawer?   Ok, simple enough to do..

Make 2 rip cuts...followed by..

The "missing" middle section is now the drawer's front...glue this mess back together..

IF you watch the grain..it will look like a solid apron..until you open the drawer...

While that glue up dries...the other 6 tenons got milled...and..

Bread board blanks....have since installed these...sliding dovetails. 

Have laid out a few cuts in what is left of the 2 x 4....looks to be plenty for the vise rebuild.

Should be able to toss that knot into the fire pit...later...

 

Stay tuned...I have the mortise jig all set up..for tomorrow.

Mortise jig was set up..

Was trying to avoid them dang knots...used a tenon to lay out the mortise..

Got out a few toys..and a couple extras...

Biggie chisel is a Buck Brothers Cast Steel 3/8"  Mortise chisel..Narex beside it is 8mm...the extra?

The old marking gauge...seemed to help things out..Hit more than one knot, chopping these mortises...enough that the 8mm had a chip missing..had to stop and fix that..

One down..7 to go..dry fit?

Need to go a tad deeper at the top...

It also pays to mark which side goes where....gets a bit confusing if I don't....Finally got all the mortises done..3 hours in the shop?

Dry fit...clamps to try to pull things tight.  Bread board ends are showing up, too...

Cleared off the bench..

One, I wanted to see how the new jaws will fit..

Because one of the bench's leg is in the way...unable to center the vise...just as well...

Have a few jigs to build...have some bead work to do...Then see about building a drawer...

I'm in it for the duration...no chance of working in mine with temperatures stuck in the single digits at nights and 20's during the day.

Snow isn't going anywhere either so Dungeon Shop Build-a-long breaks up the day.

Paying the price of going back to the shop....ow...back has stiffened up, legs are crampy..

Set up the jigs for some bead work..

Short ones were quick and easy to do...so were the long ones

This was the easiest....then each apron was sanded smooth.   Legs were a different matter

Just about every one needed cleaned up...some even before the beads..this is the "Before" shot..

And after the Stanley #3c got done...then run each of the beads..reset the jig after each 

Usual double bead...rest of the edges were sanded round....laid all the parts back, in the order they will go together....another "FUN" glue -up

Which means I need 4 corner blocks made up...ready to install.   Set up the Cordless Mitersaw

Where's the motor?   Busy typing this out...  Cut up  a couple 1 xs 

First one was a tad shorter than the rest...

Needed pilot holes drilled...then another type of cordless drill,  

Stamped by the chuck on this Stanley drill....O.D.  U.S.A.    Has a X 3  6 in.  on one of the arms..  Countersinks are done, ready to be installed...have just enough screws for the job..

 

Wanted the base glued up, then I can build the drawer guide/runners...Then work on a drawer build....then work on the top for a while, until it is ready to install..

 

Will have to find out what "flavour" he wants to finish this...might get about ready for that..in a week

After errands were run, lunch was free, two packs of screws bought....did a glue up....

Glue & Screws to attach these corner blocks...

Framing square didn't quite reach to the other leg...Tinner's Rule did...caul to give a diagonal clamp something to grab onto..then pull until things were squared up

This is what you would see...coming down the steps to the shop...that was about it..for this build...for a Monday

Rest of the time was for the Vise Rebuild...

Letting this sit overnight....next area to be worked on?

Have to build and install drawer runners/guides...without anything showing to the outside...

5 hours of shop time, today....processing pictures right now.....but...man, I am sore....

One of them days....even broke a bandsaw blade   Somehow managed to get a wee bit of work done, today.

Parts were cut to size...after all them clamps were removed...

Kicker and the drawer runners/guides   Even got the drawer itself started,,

To get  all these "extra" parts, the last 1 x 6 needed cut and ripped down....Router was set up,

These all sit in dovetail sockets...much easier to mill with the router  IFF I can see the marks to cut to...

Runners were not much better..

All these need to do is allow the drawer to slide in or out.  Fun part was adding the guides..

Wanted the guides to be square to the opening...used a square..

Got the guide flush to the opening clamped that end in place ( glued ) then the square to align things, then another clamp....then try to add a screw or two from the underside...pilot  holes helped...barely  Couldn't sit the assembly onto it's feet...was too long.  Let this sit awhile...

Hmmm...need to remove some of this mess..have joinery to do..

Even gave the new jaw a work out...and my elbow...then chisel a while..

Chisel halfway down...flip over, and complete the chops...Use the fingers to lay out the matching set..saw, and chisel those...dry fit?

Do this enough...

Front and two sides...which left the back to do...

Rough cut for length...marked the sides for a rebate on the end..shoulder cuts on the mitersaw..

Then the cheek cuts...can't use the bandsaw...sooooo

Set it up here..mark a cut line..and make a cut..

A wide chisel to pare, if need be.  repeat for the other side of the drawer.  Elbow is getting tired

Set things into place...

Had to trim just a bit off the back's length...on the mitre saw....So..how does this look?

Dry fit..not sure what handle will be used..yet. 

 

Seemed everything I touched today, either wanted to drop to the floor...or try to cut me...cussing was a bit LOUD today

Got the Stanley 45 all set up.

Need grooves for the drawer bottom to fit into...will have to wait until tomorrow   Might actually get something done...

Rigged up a jig..

And ran a 1/4" x 1/4" groove...

 

front and both sides....then tried..3 times..to get a plywood panel the correct size and shape

Ends where the back attaches to..needed two pilot holes drilled, then countersunk from the outside

Then get the parts glued up, and into the clamps...cussing level on the rise..

Wasn't the most fun thing to do..let this sit overnight....clean up and fine tune tomorrow.  Wanted to get the table's top up off the floor...only place with enough room (barely)

Got out a couple toys..

Dividers were nice..just didn't leave a marked line I could see....went with the compass, set @ 2" radius..

Otherwise, since these sharp corners are at kneecap height...May try to get enough room on the bench, to clamp the top in place..and flatten the "H" out of it

May take a day or so

May also need a couple new sanding belts....Stay tuned..

BTW: Grandson wants either a Gray or some sort of dark stain We'll see..

That is one stout drawer.  You could stand on it, maybe even jump on it and I doubt it would even feel it.

Drawer is done..

Knob was the only one I had IN the shop...fixed the "sticky" parts..

Back of the drawer was rubbing on the kicker.  Sanded that down....one side was in need of the block plane..was rubbing on the guide. kicker works

Keeps the drawer from tipping down, when you pull the drawer out a ways.

Top had ...issues

All the edges needed jointed..that was the easy part...however

Needs a different style of plane, maybe

Not your average jack plane...First off..need to cut a few corners.. 

Beltsander to smooth the saw cuts...then use the scrub-jack at a diagonal to the grain ( for now)

We ain't looking for se-through shavings, here..once the edges were close to the level of the middle, decided to joint all the edges..

Stanley No. 7c did most of the long edges...Millers Falls No. 11 cleaning things up, short edges?

Junior could handle this.  Then worked on the other face of the top..

A wee bit high in the middle.   Was going straight across the grain...until..

Just about there...tried with the grain Didn't go too well...

Stopped that..got out a better plane for the rest of the top...it would be the "show side", wouldn't it

Flipped this over. base got slotted holes drilled into the corner blocks..sat it onto the top, tried to center it....base was an 1/8" out of square

We have ways...centered along one edge,,,installed screws and washers..then

BIG pipe clamp to pull things into alignment.  Add the other two screws and washers..

Washers allow the top to move as the seasons change.  While the feet were in the air

Foot pads were nailed in place.   Then flip this mess over, and set it on the tablesaw....and set up the router..

Run a cove all the way around the top.  Until I get a better sanding belt, I can just let this table hang out in the shop

Had a mess to clean up, anyway...

Was one of those days..

OK, top has been beltsanded (50 grit) 1/3 sheet sandered ( 80  grit, 120 grit, 220 grit) and a few times with the 1/4 sheet sander in between...finally got things smoothed...

 

Ever see one of these critters?

Lever the pencil is pointing to...I can "shift" from in-line sanding back to Orbital Motion Sanding...Dad used it to refinish the doors in the house.

 

Bought the belts for the sander today.....then bought a can of stain and a pair of brushes...so...

How about..

Top is smooth ( Stain is MinWax Dark Walnut)

Corner view ( brushed the stuff on, then wipe down with a rag)

Intend to pick up a can of clear gloss poly, tomorrow....and see how the colour turns out..

Looks good. Some nice grain in the top and legs. I like the exposed box-joint drawer front too.
