October 28, 20187 yr Popular Post Was playing around a little today and thought I'd try something new. I had a little walnut crotch that was really to small to do much so I thought I'd try to turn a thin, natural edge, winged bowl just for fun. Have always wanted to try something like this but didn't really know where to start. It actually went better than I expected and even though I could see some sanding in my future I was pretty happy with what was emerging. The bowl was coming along nicely and I was really happy with the thickness. Was cleaning up around the bottom of the bowl, lost concentration for just an instant and nicked the bowl with the tool. Dohhh, pay attention!! Still, it was fun, I learned, and the next one will be better. Like professor Moody says "constant vigilance!!" Steve
October 28, 20187 yr Oh, yeah. BTDT and have a whole drawer full of T-shirts. Turn away the bark and down thru the ding on the bowl. It'll still be beautiful and we'll never tell about the design modification.

Unique, one-of-a-kind character design feature...smooth it out with sandpaper, then put your carving or burning creativity to work enhancing the feature. Stain or dye it with a contrasting stain color. "Problem"...Gone!

This one would be pretty simple I admit but it was always a just for fun learning turning. I like that, "learning turning". We'll see but more than likely it'll go on the shelf of shame.

I think it deserves a second chance. Poor little piece of walnut...tried so hard to please. I'll start a petition if need be. Edited October 29, 20187 yr by Grandpadave52
October 29, 20187 yr That is my most common mistake. I let the tip of the tool hit the project and sometimes it is time for a design change but worst case it the trash can. Hate when I do that.

It's too nice to abandon.
