It really has character. i have this old beam, about 4x9, about 8 feet long. it's been sitting outside for at least 8 years (since we bought the place), so i just whacked off 9" worth, roughed out a round with the bandsaw, and started turning. that bowl was supposed to be bigger, but i ran into some defects that i could not leave, so they had to be turned off, so it kept getting smaller and smaller. keeping with the rustic idea, i did not fill the faceplate screw holes. pine is tough to turn, lots of tear out. lots of sanding with 60 and 80 to get it somewhat smooth. i probably have enough decent beam material (one end is really rotten) to make another 4-6 bowls someday. The beams were from trees that were almost 100 years old when they were cut. When you cut into the wood, you can still smell the pine tar! You can't beat the color and patina of those old logs!
