Popular Post JohnM Posted October 11, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted October 11, 2018 Hi all, I would like to introduce you to my new (to me) baby. This is my first lathe and I am excited to fall into the vortex. I have been watching CL for well over a year but nothing ever came up that I liked. I was just about ready to give up on used and go new. I was invited to the local Woodturners Association meeting a couple of weeks ago and was given a lead on this one for $1400. Can’t wait to start this new adventure. hawkeye10, Grandpadave52, Cal and 5 others 8 Quote
Popular Post Steve Krumanaker Posted October 11, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted October 11, 2018 Nice!! At $1400.00 that looks like a great deal to me. Keep going to those meetings, best thing in the world for a new turner. Steve HARO50, lew, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post Fred W. Hargis Jr Posted October 11, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted October 11, 2018 A good deal indeed! But methinks the $1400 is only a start on what you will be spending!!! Grandpadave52, lew, HARO50 and 2 others 5 Quote
John Morris Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 Man @JohnM, you weren't kidding when you said you were looking for a lathe! Nice find my friend! So, is your shop inventory of machines almost complete now? Quote
Jim L Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 That's a great buy... and a great first lathe! Well done and congratulations. Quote
HandyDan Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 Very nice. Should be your last lathe too. Those are built to last. Quote
Gerald Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 Looks like you stole it to me and barely used. You just got the deal of a lifetime. Have fun. You will love having the bed extension too. It saves removing the tailstock, I have never tried turning off the end. Quote
lew Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 What everyone else said! Hope you were wearing a mask when you picked it up Grandpadave52, steamshovel and HARO50 1 2 Quote

JohnM Posted October 11, 2018 Author Report Posted October 11, 2018 (edited) To all the congratulatory comments, thank you all. I knew it was an excellent deal. Normally I am the one that is a "day late and a dollar short" to these kind of deals so I feel very fortunate. For once I had some inside information that allowed me to get it before it was available to the masses. I have been doing a lot of reading and watching videos, but my hands on learning curve is pretty much vertical at the moment. To me, that is half the fun of learning a new craft. To @John Morris, I still want to get a floor stand drill press and MAYBE a jointer, but my wallet is starting to give me the evil eye so I will probably have to wait a while longer.....unless another killer deal comes my way And I am still in the process of selling my ShopSmith which will help fund some more of my wants. Thanks again everyone. Edited October 11, 2018 by JohnM p_toad, Grandpadave52 and Cal 3 Quote

Buckaroo Posted October 11, 2018 Report Posted October 11, 2018 MAYBE A JOINER: A good blade on table saw eliminate need for Jointer & you need a PLAINER & drill press is my recommendations. BAR CLAMPS as cheap as you can find. A few hand clamps, couple vice grip type clamps(need'm once n awhile), Harbor Freight sells some very good very low priced chisels for lath. Look at wood handle on the expensive one, then look at same handle on HF, HF doesn't have the rings round handle , I'll hush fore I PO somebody er'another. I'm gone, good luck Grandpadave52, Dadio and Cal 3 Quote
Popular Post Gene Howe Posted October 11, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted October 11, 2018 I agree with Buck about the jointer. It's an expensive luxury. A GOOD saw blade and/or router with the correct bits will do the job quite handily. A planer is nearly a must. You can never have too many clamps. HF sells decent F styles...The black ones. Stay away from their plastic squeeze type, though. I'm not a turner but, I understand Easy Wood Tools are excellent. Even though you're a newbie to turning, why not start with the best cutters? Popular Post JohnM Posted October 11, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 11, 2018 Thanks for the additional recommendations and suggestions. I have been doing woodworking for over 40 years so I do have a good collection of clamps and other power tools including a lunchbox planer, table saw, drum sander etc. I little bit of a tool junkie, so the lathe continued to feed that habit. 1 hour ago, Jim from Easy Wood Tools said: Wait a minute.... you already owned a lathe! LOL, while I loved my SS, the lathe part to me was the least functional part due to the inability to drop the speed below 600 and the lack of weight in the overall machine. I built many things with my SS and various attachments, including this rocking horse for a niece. So it has served me well, but I am ready to expand my woodworking skills and the lathe was something I have always wanted. Artie, Dadio, Steve Krumanaker and 5 others 8 Quote
Gerald Posted October 12, 2018 Report Posted October 12, 2018 You just bought a great lathe so get a few good tools. Look at Thompson or D-way. Harbor is ok if you want to sharpen every 3 minutes. You do not need to buy the whole set at once . Cal and HARO50 2 Quote
RustyFN Posted October 12, 2018 Report Posted October 12, 2018 Great find. Looks like you won't need to upgrade for a while. Quote

Sharpening is crutual for any tool that requires it. With money saved, order some bar clamps, from same place. Yeaw I know some body's gonna say git the most expensive brand, BS, squeezed together is together whether it is accomplished with couple CC blocks siting on it or a belt jack pulling it together. I'M DONE, Yall come bac, same time same place. Gene Howe, Grandpadave52, Dadio and 3 others 6 Quote

Dadio Posted October 12, 2018 Report Posted October 12, 2018 How do you sharpen Carbide tools, send them out? I don't mean just touching up with a diamond hone. I have tried that on router bits and it is only a bandaid. Herb Quote
