October 6, 20187 yr Do we have any pen turners left on The Patriot Woodworker? I remember a few years ago half the woodworking forum or turners forum topics were pen turning.

I remember a time when pen turning was the rage, I always admired the fine touch it takes to turn a pen, and get it "just right" for the fit. @Charles Nicholls was our resident expert for the longest time. Truly works of art.
October 6, 20187 yr I still make a few. Mostly when I can find some unique wood that has a special history/meaning.
October 6, 20187 yr Popular Post I turn pens, bottle stoppers, toothpick holders and handles for kitchen tools. I give them to friends and relatives for Christmas presents, birthdays and appreciation gifts. I keep an Excell spread sheet on who gets what. I looked the other day and I have given away 165 pens. I didn't realize I had that many friends.

Some of his more unique materials were old gunstocks (cracked, broken stocks that had been given to him); a piece of (heart pine, maybe) - this was a piece of wood dredged from the bottom of the Chattahoochee river and was said to have been from an early steamboat that had sunk sometime in the 1800's. And of course, deer antler. I am sure you know, but I wouldn't recommend turning antler in a basement workshop

Truly works of art. I have turned pens. I haven't turned a pen in almost 2 years. With 2 knee surgeries and alot of other things going on. I just haven't had time. I've been thinking about turning again when I find the time. It is fun!!
