September 10, 20187 yr Popular Post Good Monday Morning! Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! Inquiring minds want to know. Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks! Latest Wiki Entries Straight from a wonderful book about "American Woods", by Shelley E. Schoonover, published in 1951, we are moving her out of print, out of copyright contents over to our wiki. There will be two categories for the trees of North America, The Softwoods, and The Hardwoods. See the latest entries at the links below. Sitka Spruce, another spruce in the (conifers) family, often growing upwards of 200' or more, with it's very prickly foliage, this majestic tree is also a favorite of woodworkers and luthiers alike, piano sounding boards are made from Sitka as well. Sitka was also used in the early days of flight, an airplanes structure was made from Sitka. Check out our newest addition to The American Woods category. September 10, 20187 yr On our trip to Alaska last June, we saw many stools, benches chairs and boxes made with Sitka spruce. Amazingly clear, as in knotand defect free. Beautiful but, subdued grain. And so smooth to the touch. All we saw was unstained. The natural color is a seemingly deeper light yellow than we're accustomed to in most pine. I'll bet Kelly and Herb can find it local to them but, I haven't seen any for sale out here in the desert.
September 10, 20187 yr making a printer stand this week. pre-finished maple plywood (leftover from bookcases).

September 10, 20187 yr Popular Post Rained all weekend; in between the rains, it rained. Managed to sneak in a couple naps though and watched a little college football. Normal stuff...now that the monsoon season has subsided, mow & trim; once that's done then I'll trim & mow; Oh yeah, pick up all the sticks & small limbs that came down during all the wind and rain. That's more fun now...the dog enjoys making games of it.
September 10, 20187 yr It was indeed soggy this weekend, and if you don't follow football you were pooped out of luck on TV. If it ever dries out the yard will take a day and 1/2 to mow. All that and I see there's another hurricane headed for the central east coast...just might effect some of us midwesterners.
September 10, 20187 yr Popular Post I used to do that, Trim and mow, since I downsized to a small yard I pay a guy to take care of it all the mowing trimming, weeding the flower beds trimming the trees, disposing of the yard waste. He charges me $30. every time he comes, old white haired retired guy making his poker money, him and his handicapped adult son. I raid the lawn maintenance fund to pay him and still come out ahead at the end of the year. Herb
September 10, 20187 yr Popular Post third time was the charm. picture all framed up. no cracked glass. now to box it up and ship it 2000 miles. UPS is very gentle, right?
September 10, 20187 yr Subbing 3 days this week. Getting the sump pump ready for the basement pool in anticipation of Florence. We've already had over 4" of rain since Saturday and folks down the hill are already pumping water.
