Newly Acquired Walker Turner DP...

Featured Replies

A friend of mine bought a house on a lake in Connecticut...he needed a portable table saw for his many projects on the house.  I gave him one of mine, delivered it and he then showed me his drill press that he offered as he no longer needed it.  It seems he used it mainly to cut mortises (AMT attachment).  He replaced it with a Jet.

As he brought me into his shop an aura of bright light shone around the press, angelic voices could be heard and in the distance I could hear music.  As my eyes regained focus the Walker Turner slowly came into view.  I could hear "Nick, over here"...

Bill plugged it in and it hummed quietly and immediately I pictured myself standing in front of it, suede apron, intently focused on the piece on the table.

Now I need mortising bits...  As I roamed the sites last night I also ran across a forum that had some posts regarding the AMT attachment.  They referred to the AMT as having a 3/4" hole for the bits rather than the (presumably) "standard" 5/8".  So now I have to wait till next week before I get a chance to measure the receiver in the attachment.  I assumed Bill kept the bits for the Jet.  If that were the case, then they might be the same size as the Jet mortiser which would make the AMT a 5/8" receiver.  No...I'm not trying to logic my way through this but I was hoping to order the bits from Lee Valley while their free shipping is on.

Do any of you know the AMT attachment to comment on the size of the bit it might take...?  Do I have a UPOS attachment...?

(Yeah...I know...where the heck are the pictures...don't yell too loud...I'm practicing my memory exercises)

Thanks in advance...

I tried a (Delta) mortising attachment for my drill press.  After cutting a several mortises, and thinking on how difficult the attachment was to install, I cut future mortises with a router (and eventually a Jessem mill).  If you devote your drill press to nothing but the attachment, maybe it would work, if you do a LOT of mortises, and you set the drill press on a low bench, and you have another DP for drilling...maybe.  If I ever convert over to doing a lot of mortises, I'll buy a dedicated mortiser.

I liked the bit about the aura and angelic voices!  :-)   Been there.

Well, PROBIE, did you bother to call Bill and ask him what size they are...why not go to the horses mouth and ask the person you got (stole) the the DP from?

Having a tough time taking my morning nap with all this chatter...

@Gerald   Thank you for coming to my defense...you know how these mentors can get...maybe I should get me a couple of new ones...

Nick, if you have a 5/8" drill bit,try to slide it into the mortiser attachment.

I agree with what @PeteM said. I had an industrial Craftsman one time with the mortise attachment and it became a real hassle to remove the chuck and install the attachment. Now if yours has a #3 morse taper , it will be easy to change over from a drill chuck to the mortiser.

I have a new never used 1/2"mortising bit w/5/8' dia. shank you can have free if it will work for you..

Thank you, Herb...very generous offer...will not be able to take advantage of it until I get back to the DP about 100 miles away (while I'm dilly-dallying with my boat)...

Will have all this resolved when I get back home this weekend...then I can measure (and pics...lol)

Thanks again...
