Land Surveyor Retirement Witness Post

Featured Replies

Another retirement gift for one of our Land Surveyors. Boy they are retiring quickly, much of the old guard had been leaving us, and more to come.

The letters are routed with a template I made, then I simply paint the entire surface with several coats with rattle can, then let dry, and plane to expose the nice crisp lettering.

This post is Cherry, with Ebony tapered plugs as the period punctuation. Just came off the planer, now final sanding and final touches.

The base is clamped and glued too.

So the question begs, who's making my retirement post!

I'll drop that bug in the County Surveyor ear when the time comes! Good idea Gene.

May have to make your own now and give it to someone to hold onto until the time comes.

Just need to mount the post to the base, coat of wipe on, then mount the brass disk into the base.

Almost done!

You got it Keith, RIV CO SUR, for "Riverside County Surveyor". RIV CO SUR is on all of our monuments and control points around our county, and on our projects as well.

No Herb, that sucker came from a survey supply outfit that specializes in marking monument disks for surveying. Pretty cool eh!:)

For setting monumentation, we will however stamp our own with a steel stamping kit, but for a show piece like this, we like to have it perfect and done professionally.

That is so cool, makes such a professional presentation, I would retire early just to get one of those, better than a gold watch.

Who needs a watch once you're retired, anyway?

Exactly! I'll probably be making these for the guys still employed long after I retire, till I die actually.

i got zip when i retired.  i got a phone call, "today is your last day, send in the laptop with your last expense report"

and that was it.  they chose the timing.  not even a coffee mug or ream of paper.  nothing.

somewhere in my files i have a photo of the survey marker at South Pole in Jan 1994.  brass item with similar engraving.

After 28 years with the company, I got 10 days paid vacation at the company condo on the Big Island at Kona ,and round trip ticket for wife and I and son, and a check for $3K.

It made up for all that free overtime I put in over the years. Like the Old Scotsman I worked for for years said, "They retired me with dignity", I was Happy.

Didn't get a marker tho. After that it was "Herb, who?"

Herb

Like DAB, I got zip. But, I was self employed. The feeling of freedom was enough.

I would have complained to the H-R Department.;)
