August 22, 20187 yr Popular Post Had some Pine scraps.....decided a simple little step stool would be nice to try to build... The one board was too narrow, and a bit too thin....I cut it into two (almost) matching pieces...about 8" long.. Needed to loose the knot, too. Now you see it.. And now you don't. These came from the same board? We have ways.. Stanley No. 3c Jointed both edges with these clamped together. Faces of the boards needed some clean up too.. Did I mention we had quite a bit of rain, lately? Floor is starting to dry out...back to work... Nice and clean. Did all four faces.. Might have this plane set up about right? Then, mark out a few center points, draw a few lines, even used the compass for some curve work. Bandsaw to cut things out.. Hey...they match! These two will get a stretcher between them, something like this? Will cut a pair of tenons on each end of the stretcher. Whew...set these aside, for now... First panel...has two issues, the knot, and that pitch pocket. Second panel? Has even more issues...the wane will have to go, the remains of a big knot, and yet another pitch pocket...mark some lines, run the bandsaw a bit.. Bad stuff removed...which left these three pieces.. Yeah...I can also handsaw about this straight, too.. Back to that plane, again.. Jointed the sawn edges straight and square....beginning to like this plane.. Jointed the third one. The two in the background? Already done, and just stacked up, no glue used. One board was a tad long, and ugly grain on the end.....we have ways... Tried to match them up, for the best grain.....not too far off? Time for glue and clamps.. Couple scraps to help out, and steady things...then set the legs in place... Maybe once the glue cures, I can chop a few through mortises? May have a trick to help with that, so I can chop from both faces. Need to cobble a few Walnut wedges. Round a few corners, ease a few edges, maybe add a curve or two to that stretcher? Stay tuned.....might have it done in time to take to Fred's place?

August 22, 20187 yr Wow Steven, you need to slow down man! If my wife ever sees what you get done in a day... she likely wouldn't be too keen on my buying more "needed" tools Really off to a great start. Where do you get your ideas from?
August 22, 20187 yr Author Design is from the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up....yep, all in my head. Bench needs to support me, if I have to stand on it.... Letting the glue cure for a while, today.....stay tuned..
August 23, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Hmmm, Grandson decided to try and mow the yard....part way through, the mower stops.....he decided to call it done, and then head for his "day job".....Some dummy decided to just go out, fill the gas tank on the mower. To see IF it would start....of course....wound up mowing the rest of the yard...mower took two pulls, and started right up..Yard mowed. Rested up the rest of the evening...working on a jigsaw puzzle ( 2000 pc..whew) Decided to at least take the clamps off. Grabbed the camera....Boss wanted the towels out of the dryer, too.. Hate Multi-tasking Clamps taken off ( towels weren't dry yet, re-start the dryer) and the glue joints cleaned up Not too bad? Same #3c plane, as before. Had two scraps laying on the bench....which one was the Stretcher....didn't mark it Well, it wasn't this one...maybe try that other one? Ok, that will do. Drew a few lines ( waiting on that dryer..) and then the bandsaw did it's thing.. Beltsander to even things out. Used the tenons to lay out a hole, that needed dug... All the way through. Aldi's chisel and a hammer....test fit? Wedge will pull it down tight...used this mortise to lay out the other...wanted them to match each other... 2 down, 6 to go...marked where the wedge will go, and which direction... There is one heavy pencil line and a gap....once the wedge is driven in, gap will close. Wedges? Should be able to cobble a few wedges out of this scrap of Walnut? Dryer says it is done. Load the towels up, grab the camera, and close up shop....Maybe tomorrow, I can try to get something done maybe? Stay tuned...
August 24, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Got a bit done today.....until the back started to act up... Got these all ready for the drill press.. With a scrap block to sit the main item on...no blow-outs allowed.. Laid out some toys..for later.. Hopefully at least one will be sharp enough.. Square tenons do not fit round holes....so... hammer and an Aldi's chisel. dry fit? A bit snug...repeat for the other end....then another dry fit....with the stretcher.. Clamped because the stretcher was a hair too long....you'll have that, on the bigger jobs Spokeshave, the ease some edges.. Did some drawing.. Needed to square the ends, and ease these sharp corners....my shin will like that detail.. Also drew a line, to tell which way the saw kerfs will go.. The ones one the ends of the stretcher were easy for the bandsaw to cut....these three were a different matter.. We have ways.. Got the top done...assembled dry. Then the bandsaw to cut a few (8) walnut wedges... Back was getting sore.....decided to wait until tomorrow to assemble this thing... Maybe tomorrow I can use a bit of glue? Stay tuned...this may even go to the Get Together...

August 24, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Day #4.....Glue up day! Wasn't happy with the job from the spokeshave...so the smallest router bit was chucked up... Ran this around all the edges, and sanded each side... Then the fun began..... And the repair. one foot on each end wanted to split off....fix. Had issues with the stretcher, including a split...fixed. Stretcher didn't sit down just right...orange clamp for that..fixed....Issue was too FAT of a wedge.....had a couple others needed to be changed out...then the top.. No issues here. Just need to buzz things down flush...sometime this evening...after the glue has set awhile. I did get all packed up...for tomorrow's Road trip... Will see you all, then....

Ron took me on a rust hunt and we meandered into Ohio. Took us a while to convince the authorities that we were just lost. I think he got his passport updated, later.
August 25, 20187 yr Author Popular Post So...how about a PIP of this little project? ( 4 days to build a simple, little stool..getting slow in me dotage ) Stands 8" tall, and just under 12" long... And is 8- 5/8" wide....Boss has already tried it out, as a foot rest.... A look at the top, and... The underside.. It even sits without any rocking going on... It will be going along in the morning....(They are doing a Drunk driver checkpoint just down the road from Fred....over on St RT 29......Area will be thick with all the cops,,be careful out there...) Cute little bugger, ain't it..
August 29, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Ok...a finish has been applied to this little project.... "Golden Pecan" stain, allow to dry. Amber Shellac, allow to dry.......Clear Gloss Poly...allowing it to dry.. And.... From the side....and.. An end view....will let this dry overnight, then see how it looks (Pumpkin Pine ??)
August 29, 20187 yr Probably took awhile to get all the finger prints removed after it's journey and getting passed around last weekend. Finish really made the tenons & wedges contrast really pop. Looks great.

Steve, you did a great job on the stool and I appreciate you taking the time to show everyone how to make it. Is the stool going to be for one of your grandkids?
