August 16, 20187 yr Popular Post Here are the latest recipe boxes. I found that when the top is cut off that it becomes shorter and the box becomes lager due to the sloping front. this created a slight problem when installing the metal hinges to line up the front of the box with the top. I compensated by going to the Rob Corson wooden dowel hinge on the cedar boxes I like that setup better and will do it on any future boxes. Also will do a separate tutorial on how it is done. Herb
August 16, 20187 yr Very nice. I've yet to try Rob's hinges. I brought bought his kit and CD, though. Were they difficult?

No not really, I have been doing them for years now and really like them. The biggest problem I had from the start is drilling the hole in the center of the dowel all the way through so it is centered coming out the far side. I have come up with various jigs and now either use the Incra hinge jig. If I had a lathe I could do them chucking them up and drilling with a tail stock drill chuck setup. I really like wooden hinges. Herb
August 17, 20187 yr Love what you do with the hinges but tell me do you glue the round hinge onto the box or is there another mount system?
August 17, 20187 yr Author Another way I have done the pins is to use 1" long metal pins, (from 8d nails, brazing rod, etc. any 1/8"dia. rod) and drill the dowel segments 1/2"deep from each end. The pins don't have top touch. this is easy way to center the pins in the dowels. once they are glued up, they can not come apart. Herb

Yours are really impressive and add such an extra special touch of craftsmanship to a project. I like them all you have pictured here though. Spectacular spaulted lid on the first one. Great contrast.

Herb I doubt that Rob will ever see that post. But, he's sure welcome to join us. We need more Canadians. John and Danman are probably getting lonely.

August 22, 20187 yr Geeze guys. Sorry you missed him. Maybe he moved. Edit: I misled you guys. He's actually in St Clet. No wonder you didn't see him. Edited August 22, 20187 yr by Gene Howe
August 22, 20187 yr If I was doing them I would drill them on the lathe. I would use an oversized dowel and then remount them on the lathe on a 1/8" pin and true the diameters.
