July 9, 20188 yr We made it home from MO last night. Hit the sack. Great to sleep in our own bed. Today we unpack and wash clothes and rest and recuperate. Hard at it tomorrow. Get to use the new corner dove tail jig to finish up the rifle box then, start on the R&R of the planer head. I'll try to get pics of both operations.
July 9, 20188 yr Worked around the property for three days straight and walked around the flea market yesterday. Kind of sore. Need a break. Maybe ride the mower around today.
July 9, 20188 yr Let Gene get back to work and maintain/hold down the vacation project... Edited July 9, 20188 yr by Stick486
July 9, 20188 yr Weekend, trimmed some hedges and a some other yard work, a little tool re-furbing, worked on a pedestal fan and mostly embraced the best weather we've had all summer. We had free HBO & other channels over the weekend; re-watched "Hacksaw Ridge" yesterday...even better the second time. "Vacation" over; heat & humidity returning, shuttle bus truck service resumed this AM; Mower maintenance I skillfully skirted over the weekend and lots of mowing on tap for the week. Big event Wednesday; travelling to the Emerald City for a hair-cut; travel time takes far longer than chair time.

July 9, 20188 yr Stick I thought your story for Monday was "nothing". Today I gather some things up for a talk on turning at the Madison Lions Club tomorrow. Beginning to get a newsletter out for the turning club. Working to turn some wood that got worms in it before they eat it all up. Took a hollow form to the neighbor the wood came from, they will be moving next week. Always try to return something to the source of the wood .

July 9, 20188 yr The only thing I have to do is go look at some wood tomorrow. My wife’s uncle has a huge auction a couple of months ago and the guy that bought a batch of red oak didn’t take it all. I’m the guy that gets to look at it and take what I want.
July 9, 20188 yr BUMMER!!! The miter bar that attaches to the sled used to cut the dovetail splines is not made to fit a Shopsmith miter slot. Guess it'll need to be machined to fit. More $$$.

July 9, 20188 yr Author @Gene Howe, in my quest to downsize my shop, during my TS searching, I see a few nice complete Shopsmiths for sale, cheap. Complete systems for less than 6,7,800 bucks. And nice shape too. Do you have any feedback on this equipment as a primary machine?

Mine are both MK Vs. Look for one with the double bearing quill. The DP mode is excellent. I get along with the table saw but, it's a bit small. You definitely need an outfeed system. The $800 one is likely an upgraded model with factory outfeed capability. The accessories are ok. I also, barely get along with the bandsaw but, the 6"x48" belt sander is a jewel. And, the disc sanders are great. The key to the ease of operation of any of the accessories is the variable speed capability of the SS. I don't turn but, others have stated that the lathe function is quite good. You'd be better served by locating a nearby owner/user and arranging for a hands on demo. Or, my shop is always open.
July 9, 20188 yr Got a glue-up done...amid much cussing....even had two pipe clamps left over Monday? Usual BS....Got my finger poked again...every Monday. Monitoring the Blood thinner... On the way home this afternoon...came to an intersection..St Rt 235 meets St Rt 47....with 47 having the stop signs...which the driver for Knight Transport apparently disregarded....pulled right on through....just missed him by 10'....good thing I had slowed down to make the turn..otherwise would have T-boned the tractor of the semi... Yep...one of THEM days.....chose not to open the shop, today....

There’s a saying in the Midwest that goes, “Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then.” We’ll, I guess I’m a blind squirrel. I examine the pile of lumber and it is mostly walnut, maple and a dab of poplar. Probably about 500 bf of the stuff. I brought some home but I need to find more room in the garage. My barn loft is already full. They are thrilled to get rid of it and were ready to burn it.
