April 19, 20188 yr Popular Post As part of the Dungeon Clean-up this year....the old plough plane was rehabbed back to life.....found broken, and discarded....new parts were made. New, better wedges were made. Cutter sharpened up. New, Maple handle was made. Skate was cleaned of rust. A new fence, made out of Ash to replace the broken Beech one. New wedges are Walnut. There is a screw to help secure the handle in place, as the old dovetail socket was worn away. Glued the handle in place, then added the #10 screw. Two other #10 screws to attach the fence to it's arms. Had to repair one arm...old screw had split the "boss" where it attaches to the arm. Wards #78 plane to make the rebate. Wedge to hold the cutter was beveled to allow the cutter to reach full depth of cut. It also deflecks the shavings out the right side of the plane. As there is no place for the shavings to go on this side.. far cry from what was dug out of the "trash"... Even the sole of the plane needed worked on....was worn crooked... As found.....iron plane is a Stanley #4. Plough plane does look a bit better, now....
April 20, 20188 yr Spectacular Steven!! Not only a looker, but a worker too. Thanks for taking the time and effort and caring enough to restore this to a working model again.
April 20, 20188 yr While I'm looking at this, I saw a local add in craigslist selling what looks like 13 different wooden moulding planes. Owner has had them for 30 years and is asking $160.00 for the lot. He won't separate them. Excellent condition according to the ad. Just wondering about the pricing? Various manufacturers. April 20, 20188 yr Author Price new ones...yes, new ones are being made. Even a 1/2 set of hollows and rounds are VERY expensive...
April 20, 20188 yr I agree with Steven 13 each is a great price. I have this nice plough plane with no fence nor arms. Is there a place to buy parts? This is the type with screw arms. Edited April 20, 20188 yr by Gerald
April 20, 20188 yr 1 hour ago, It Was Al B said: Just wondering about the pricing? Various manufacturers. Al, That calculates to ~$12.30/ea which is a steal IMO. Most around here sell for $15-$30, usually have one or more cracks in the body and/or missing the cutter(s), wedge(s) or handles. Of course in an Antique shop they are mostly clueless what they actually have and are more focused selling it as an "antique" for someone use to decorate. Good ones that are complete and usable sell for $50 upwards to $100 or even more if they are multi-function/cutter &/or have a fence. Some are marked with a manufacturer and others often have been hand made as part of an apprenticeship. I'm not smart enough to distinguish between one or another. April 20, 20188 yr Author Was at an auction a few years ago.... The only thing I could afford out of this pile... A Stanley #28 and #29...$5.......there was two rows of tables... And.. These went for about $35...each... Double sided saw til...sold as a set, or by the piece..never found out....Detail on the fancy planes... Mainly Moving Filister style of planes...Would have been very easy to spend a $100 or three that day...Only had $10 in my pocket..Bummer.
October 27, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Ok...a little more info on this old plane. It also was getting used, today, BTW.. There is a bunch of letters stamped into the nose of the plane.. CIN. O. (Cincinnati OH?) ROSEBOOM ( G. F> Roseboom was a plane maker in Cinci, back about 1840 to 1850s....from the way the screws looked, the OEM ones, this plane would be about 1844...) Plane needs a lot of candle wax, to slide smoothly....Left hand goes over the top of the plane, thumb on the fence side....and it doesn't like going against the grain...and will tell you instantly when you do. Somewhere out there, there is a "match" for this plane....that makes the "tongue" to match up with the groove. Plane cost me $16 when I bought it.
October 27, 20187 yr Popular Post Very cool Steven. I think I was out when this thread was started. You could do me, and maybe others (?) a great service if you were to post up a detailed narrative on how you go about sharpening one of these "finds"; whether it be a plane or a chisel. @steven newman - you can take that as a "hint"...
